On a sunny September morning in Provo, preschoolers scrambled through a shaded sandbox, digging for buried toy dinos while learning about real fossils. This paleontology adventure was hosted by community volunteers, including BYU employees Robin L. Conover (BFA ’16) and Joshua D. Hammari (’25), pictured.

Part of a 1,500-person cohort, these volunteers were participating in the annual United Way Day of Caring, with projects ranging from school-ground maintenance to collections and drives.

BYU staff join in as part of a 60-year partnership with United Way. “I enjoy seeing the joy of discovery in others, especially in exuberant, small children,” Hammari says. “Our goal was to give them some personal attention and let them know they are important.”
