Looking Back: 1950s Cougar Basketball

An archival photo of the 1950 men's basketball team in South America.

During the summer of 1950 the Cougar men’s basketball team took its first trip abroad—a 33-day tour of South America—where the team won 12 straight games, visited local church branches, and donned these iconic warm-ups. The squad featured standouts Mel R. Hutchins (BS ’51), kneeling, fourth from left, and Roland T. Minson (BS ’52), behind Hutchins. They would later win the NIT Championship. (Courtesy L.
