Swimming and Diving

Rafael Alfaro (’14) 

200 Individual Medley / El Salvador

In the 2011 season, Alfaro was the best Cougar in the 400 individual medley. His uncle Piero S. Ferracuti (BS ’80) swam for BYU and competed in the 1976 Olympics.

Hailey J. Campbell (’15)

100 Backstroke / United States

Campbell won the 100 and 200 backstroke during the 2012 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) championships. She was the only woman to represent BYU at the 2012 NCAA championships.

Kimberly Welch Doroghian (’14)

100 Butterfly / United States

Doroghian placed fourth in the 100 butterfly in the 2012 MPSF championships.

Andrew M. Rutherfurd (’13)
100 Freestyle / Bolivia

Rutherfurd broke Bolivia’s national records in the 100 and 200 freestyle.

Candice R. Smith (’12) 

100 Backstroke / United States

In the 2008 Olympic trials, Smith placed 50th out of more than 100. At the 2012 MPSF championships she took second in the 200 backstroke.

Brandon D. Watson (’12) 

3-Meter Springboard / United States

Watson represented Team USA at the 2011 Summer World University Games and at the 2012 Canada Cup, and he placed first at the 2011 USA Diving Winter National Championships.

Brady S. Wells (’14)

100 Breaststroke / United States

Wells placed fourth at the 2012 MPSF championships and first at the USA Swimming sectionals in the 100 breaststroke.

Cycling 

Arielle E. Martin (BS ’07)

BMX Cycling / United States

A crash in the world quarterfinals kept Martin from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, but her fourth-place finish at the 2012 BMX World Championships qualified her for the 2012 Olympic team.

Track and Field

Leif H. Arrhenius (BS ’11)

Discus / Sweden

Leif Arrhenius was the Mountain West Conference (MWC) outdoor champion in discus in 2008, 2010, and 2011. An NCAA champion in indoor shot put, he placed second in discus and shot put at the 2011 NCAA outdoor championship.

Niklas B. Arrhenius (BS ’08) 

Discus / Sweden

Niklas Arrhenius competed in the 2008 Olympics. The three-time All-American placed 12th at the 2011 World Championships and was the 2007 NCAA champion in discus.

Miles B. Batty (’12) 

1,500-Meter / United States

Batty won 2011 NCAA indoor championships in the mile and the distance medley relay (DMR).

Jillian Camarena-Williams (MS ’12) 

Shot Put / United States

Camarena-Williams competed in the 2008 Olympics. She holds the indoor American shot put record and is tied for the outdoor American record. An eight-time national indoor champion and two-time national outdoor champion, she won bronze at the 2011 World Outdoor Championships.

Christopher L. Carter (’12)

400-Meter Hurdles / United States

Carter was a member of the 2011 NCAA indoor champion DMR team. He placed eighth in the 2012 NCAA outdoor 400-meter hurdles.

Heidi Magill Dahl  (BA ’09)

800-Meter / United States

Dahl won the 1,500-meter at the MWC outdoor championships in 2005. She won the mile at the 2007 MWC indoor championships.

Jennifer Rockwell Grossarth (BS ’08)

400-Meter Hurdles / United States

Grossarth placed third in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2012 USATF West Region Championships.

Nachelle Stewart Mackie (’13) 

800-Meter / United States

Mackie won both the indoor and outdoor 2012 NCAA titles in the 800-meter, setting an outdoor collegiate season record with her career best of 2:01.06.

Joshua E. McAdams (BS ’07) 

Steeplechase / United States

McAdams competed in the 2008 Olympics. He was the 2009 and 2007 U.S. outdoor steeplechase champion and won the 2007 Pan American Games.

Katie N. Palmer (’12) 

800-Meter / United States

Palmer placed third in the 800-meter at the 2012 NCAA indoor championships.

Victor R. Weirich (’13)

Pole Vault / United States

Weirich won the 2011 MWC indoor championship in pole vault, and he placed fifth in the 2011 NCAA indoor championships and fourth in the 2011 NCAA outdoor championships.

Volleyball

Russell K. Holmes (BS ’08) United States

Richard E. Lambourne (’99) United States

Ryan M.Millar (BS ’03) United States

Taylor L. Sander (’14) United States

Men’s Indoor Volleyball / United States

Sander made the national volleyball team, earning a chance to compete for a spot on the Olympic roster. Holmes, Lambourne, and Millar have already made the Olympic team. Lambourne and Millar helped clinch the gold for Team USA in the 2008 Olympics.
