Elise Otteson Taylor (BS ’16) and her husband, Austin Taylor (’18), finish tuning a bike at the Provo Bicycle Collective. Austin, now the director of the organization, became involved when he chose to go car-free his freshman year and used a community bike shop to keep his bikes in shape. The Collective, with five employees and hundreds of volunteers, refurbished nearly 500 bicycles in 2016 and has programs to help people in need get a bicycle. People of all ages can earn bikes, buy bikes, and take classes in fixing bikes and riding them safely. Austin envisions making biking a sustainable mode of transportation for locals and is working closely with the mayor’s office to make Provo a more bike-friendly city.
