Gameday Horseplay

Sherifs on horsesTHERE was a new 1,000-pound presence at football games this year, and it didn’t come from the offensive line.

A mounted unit of the Utah Highway Patrol, 15 officers with privately owned horses, helped with crowd control at the BYU and University of Utah football games in preparation for their work at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

“Our primary working areas during the Olympics will be the medals plaza, the opening and closing ceremonies, and downtown in the fenced area,” said Lt. Ken Peay, commander of the unit. The practice at the football games has been helpful, says Peay. “This type of event acclimatizes the horses to noise and large crowds of people.”
