President Merrill J. Bateman has appointed G. Franklin Lewis, assistant to the president for strategy and technology, chair of BYU’s Olympic Steering and Operating Committees. In this position, Lewis will oversee all aspects of BYU’s involvement in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

“With his extensive management background, Franklin Lewis is well qualified to address the challenges such an event may present for the university and to search for opportunities for our students, faculty, and staff,” says President Bateman. “We need to know how best to be of service when the world arrives, quite literally, on our doorstep.”

Lewis will serve as the liaison between BYU and the Salt Lake Olympic Committee and the LDS Church Olympic Committee. While some plans have already been made, Lewis says his first initiative is to create a database of all Olympic-related activities that may involve the university community.

“One of our primary goals is to work with the Salt Lake Olympic Committee to cultivate meaningful service opportunities and involvement,” he says.
