There’s something exhilarating and terrifying about the sudden independence that comes with leaving home and going to college. After a week or so of feeling smug about their newfound freedom, most students realize that life on their own is no cake walk. Money, time, food, friends, and experience are all often in short supply, and balancing responsibilities, affording a social life, and getting more than six hours of sleep a night can require ingenuity. Still, however daunting the challenges students face, they somehow survive until graduation and, more often than not, remember those years with fondness. We want to hear your stories of student survival.
But that’s not all. We also want submissions about your favorite BYU sporting memories as a spectator or an athlete. From Danny Ainge’s coast-to-coast drive against Notre Dame to the Miracle Bowl comeback to the Cougars’ recent national championships in volleyball and women’s cross country, BYU’s teams and athletes have drawn huge crowds and inspired students and alumni for decades. Whether your memory was formed while sitting in the stands, watching TV, or participating in the event, we want to hear about that shot, pass, swing, spike, match, game, crowd, or player you’ll never forget. Send your stories of student survival and of sporting memories to First Person, BYU Magazine, 209 UPB, Provo, UT 84602 (e-mail: firstperson@byu.edu; fax: 801-378-5669).
