Former BYU football standout Steve Young (BA ’84) was one of six former NCAA student athletes to receive the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award for 2009. The award recognizes athletes who completed collegiate careers 25 years ago, have excelled in their chosen careers, and have provided service to their communities and professions.
Young, a studio analyst for ESPN, won the 1983 Davey O’Brien Award, given to the top NCAA quarterback. As the highest-rated quarterback in NFL history, Young led the San Francisco 49ers to victory in Super Bowl XXIX and was named MVP. The two-time league MVP was also selected as the 1992 NFL Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News. During his career, he appeared in seven consecutive Pro Bowls and won four straight NFL passing titles. In 2005 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Young graduated with degrees in international relations and law from BYU. He created the Forever Young Foundation and is active in several other charities nationwide. He is the honorary chair of the Children’s Miracle Network in San Francisco. Young is a member of the Dream Team of Children’s Miracle Network and Parents of Children with Disabilities.
Young is the fourth BYU alum to receive the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award. Others include Larry J. EchoHawk (BS ’70), Gifford Nielsen (BA ’77), and Danny Ainge (BA ’92).
