Loss and Renewal

When communications major Mark R. Williams (BA ’11) heard about Marius Dasianu, he wanted to share the Romanian boy’s story of loss and renewal. The result: a “student Emmy”–winning documentary.

The film, I Am Not My Body, which Williams directed as part of his BYU honors thesis, won the second-place documentary award and the Seymour Bricker Family Humanitarian Award at the 33rd College Television Awards. The documentary follows Marius, who, after suffering third- and fourth-degree burns on 75 percent of his body, was helped by two BYU students and their families to come to the United States for surgeries and a better life. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation flew Williams and Marius to be at the awards ceremony. “It proves to me the amazing power of the story and how it resonates with people,” says Williams.

His student Emmy was one of five won by BYU—the Cougars’ largest haul at the event. See BYU’s other 2012 winners on page 12.
