Lawrence J. Green (BM ’79) strummed on a $5 six string in his grad school audition for American University. He got in. Since then Green, BYU’s guitar program coordinator, has owned many other guitars—but none of them for very long. “I change them like underwear,” jokes Green, “but I’ve settled on a couple that I really like, so I stay with them for at least a month—I mean the guitars, not the underwear.” With a lifetime of experience, Green can make any guitar sound good. At any given time he owns about nine guitars and variations on guitars. Each serves a specific purpose, his arsenal providing the appropriate instruments for rock, jazz, country, and, his favorite style, classical.
