James V. Hansen (BS ’63) sums it up simply: “The Ironman is a fun way to stay fit. It’s an adventure.” So is golf, but this professor of information systems in the Marriott School of Management prefers the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile run. He doesn’t just compete—he’s won third place in his age group three times. Oh, and his age? 70 years and counting.
60 • age at which Hansen competed in his first Ironman competition in 1996
14 • hours to complete the race, on average
30–40 • mph on bike descents (“I’m a bit of a coward.”)
11 • Ironman competitions so far
13 • weeks to train for a competition
