Men’s Basketball

The Atlanta Hawks selected Travis M. Hansen, ’03, as the 37th pick in the second round of the 2003 NBA Draft. The shooting guard from Orem, Utah, is the first Cougar taken in the draft in 10 years and the first BYU player selected under head coach Steve Cleveland.

Softball

BYU outfielder Oli Keohohou, ’04, and catcher Lauren N. Watson, ’05, were named to the Easton Sports 2003 Softball All-American team.

Swimming and Diving

The men’s team finished out the 2002–2003 season with a No. 18 ranking and a fourth consecutive MWC Championship. Swimmer Randy T. Belliston, ’04, and divers Justin L. Beardall, ’03, Aaron Russell, ’03, and T. Scott Randall, ’04, qualified for the NCAA Championships. At the NCAAs Russell finished with a First-Team All-America honor after placing fourth in the 1-meter. The men’s team finished No. 2 academically in the nation.

The women’s swimming and diving team won a fourth consecutive MWC Championship title and Cortnee Adams, ’03, and Tamber M. Covington, ’04, qualified for the NCAA Championships. The team also earned All-American Academic team honors.

After his seventh-place finish at the U.S. Nationals, Diogo Yabe, ’04, a native of Parana, Brazil, won the 200-meter IM at the Trofeu Brazil (Brazilian Nationals). His time of 2:03.98 set a new Brazilian record and qualified him for the Brazilian National Team that competed in the Pan American Games.

Track and Field

At the 2003 NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., a total of seven BYU athletes earned All-America honors, including Trent R. Powell, ’05 (pole vault), Chad A. Simkins, ’04 (800 meters), Kassi Andersen, ’05 (steeplechase), Lisa Antonelli, ’05 (steeplechase), Aneta H. Lemiesz, ’04 (800 meters), Jamie L. Cottle, ’03 (1,500 meters), and Lindsey Steele Metcalf, ’05 (high jump).
