Far and Away, BYU Leads Nation

For the second year, BYU tops the list for the most students studying abroad annually.

The Open Doors 2001 report from the Institute of International Education reports that BYU sends the most students (1,967), followed by Penn State University (1,743), Michigan State University (1,674), and the University of Texas at Austin (1,619).

International Executive Award

The Marriott School of Management and BYU Board of Trustees named M. Anthony Burns, ’64, chairman of Ryder System, the 2001 International Executive of the Year. President Thomas S. Monson, First Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ, presented the award to Burns at a banquet held Nov. 16, 2001.

“Tony Burns served for nearly 18 years as CEO of one of the most successful transportation and logistics companies in the world,” said Ned C. Hill, ’70, dean of the Marriott School. “He is not only a proven leader but also a man of integrity who cares deeply about people.”

Fulbright Limelight

The U.S. Information Agency and the J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board awarded Fulbright scholar grants to business management professor emeritus Howard W. Barnes, ’64, political science assistant professor Darren G. Hawkins, and assistant professor of economics Norman K. Thurston, ’90.

Seongho Lee, a visiting associate professor of general education from Hallym University in Koyang, Korea, also received a Fulbright award.
