ON Nov. 15, 2000, LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated BYU‘s newly expanded Harold B. Lee Library. BYU President Merrill J. Bateman, humanities professor Todd A. Britsch, ’62, and President James E. Faust and President Thomas S. Monson of the LDS Church’s First Presidency also spoke at the dedication ceremony held in the Marriott Center.
After four years of construction, the library’s size has increased by 234,000 square feet, and all of its existing areas have been renovated and modernized. The expanded facility adds capacity for 1.7 million more books, 1,600 more study spaces, 325 computer work stations, a 200-seat auditorium, eight technology-enhanced classrooms, and other facilities for distance education and technology-assisted learning.

President Gordon B. Hinckley
“If I were a student here and another student asked me where I was going, instead of saying I was going to the library to study, I think that I’d just say, ‘I’m going underground.’”
