Out of the swampy marshes of cyberspace, the Department of Communications at BYU has (re)created “Nauvoo the BYUtiful,” a Web site designed to be a gathering place “to bring the best that BYU has to offer to BYU alumni and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worldwide,” says the greeting visitors will find when they stop by Nauvoo.
Nauvoo is an interactive site where alumni and friends can access LDS Church resources and information about the happenings of BYU (performances, conferences, workshops, exhibits, research projects, etc.). Visitors to the site can carry on e-mail dialogues with BYU professors and gather in “chat rooms” for discussions with other visitors. The site also provides space and service for the posting of family newsletters.
A map of Nauvoo provides the navigation interface for the site, which was created by communications students. The site was designed to provide and maintain a place on the Internet where members of the BYU and LDS communities can gather with others who share their values and standards.
A demonstration site went online in December 1997. As more contributors and visitors gather in Nauvoo the BYUtiful, the site will offer increasingly more resources.
