1974 | Darrell L. Gallup (BS ’74, PhD Utah State University ’78; Elizabeth Smith [BS ’75]; Meridian, Idaho) received the 2012 Geothermal Pioneer Award from the Geothermal Resources Council at its annual meeting in Reno, Nev. Gallup has spent 32 years improving production processes in the geothermal industry.

1977 | April DeCelle Carter (BA ’77; Robert S. [BS ’77]; Paradise, Calif.), a host at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, has been the race director for the DeCelle Memorial Lake Tahoe Relay, the oldest distance relay in the country, for 15 years. Carter was a high school cross country coach for 10 years.

1979 | W. Preston Green (BS ’79; American Fork, Utah) published Jewelers of Men: The Art of Spiritual Healing, recounting lessons he learned in 20 years of helping young men transition to adulthood.

1982 | Sherman L. Fleek (BA ’82, MA University of Colorado ’94; Michel Johnson [’79]; Quicksburg, Va.) published Saints of Valor: Mormon Medal of Honor Recipients, sharing harrowing accounts of war from Latter-day Saints who received the Medal of Honor. Roger L. Glenn (BA ’82; Donna Lallatin [’77]; Tracy, Calif.) was named senior vice president of human resources at Gordmans, a Nebraska-based apparel and home fashions retailer.

1984 | Patricia Whitney Roper (MA ’84; Marlan; St. George, Utah) has been inducted into the Dixie State College Athletic Hall of Fame. Roper was the cheer and dance advisor at Dixie State and spent 35 years as a professor of physical education and dance.

1985 | Eileen Hunsaker (BS ’85, MS University of Utah ’92; Medford, Mass.) was promoted to clinical assistant professor by the MGH Institute of Health Professions, a health sciences graduate school in Boston. She has been a faculty member of communication sciences and disorders since 2006.

1987 | Richard S. Knecht (BS ’87, MS California State University ’90; Katherine Duffin [AA ’85, BA ’96]; Citrus Heights, Calif.] has published his first children’s book, Does Grandpa Have a Grandpa? Knecht is the director of the Placer County Children’s System of Care and a founding board member at iFoster, a national nonprofit agency dedicated to helping at-risk families access digital services.

1990 | Tim J. Sheehan (BA ’90, MPA ’93; Karla Christensen [BA ’91]; Kaysville, Utah) has been named vice president of government and community relations at Salt Lake Community College.

1992 | Hector A. Chichoni (BA ’92, JD ’96, MPA ’96; Ladelle; Miami), a lawyer for Duane Morris LLP, was honored by Chambers USA. Chichoni is the chair of the firm’s immigration practice in Florida. Eric A. Eliason (BA ’92, MA University of Texas ’94, PhD University of Texas ’98; Stephanie Smith [BA ’91, MA ’95]; Springville, Utah) copublished Warrior Ways, a book that explores military folklife. Jeff M. Stone (BS ’92, MAcc ’92; Elissa Weatherbee [’93]; Elk Grove, Calif.) has joined Macias Gini & O’Connell, a certified public accounting and consulting firm.

1993 | Jeffrey B. Fugal (BA ’93, JD Indiana University ’96, LLM University of Denver ’97; Michelle; Goodyear, Ariz.) was selected by his peers for inclusion in the 2013 edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

1994 | Lance V. Erickson (BA ’94, BA ’94, MCoun Idaho State University ’04; Heidi; Pocatello, Idaho) earned a doctorate in higher education administration from Idaho State University, where he is the associate director of the career center. Trevor L. T. Greene (BA ’94, MA Central Washington University ’98; Melanie; Zillah, Wash.), principal of Toppenish High School in Washington, was named the 2013 MetLife/NASSP National High School Principal of the Year. Kurt H. Miller (BS ’94; Sheline Sargent [BA ’92]; Salt Lake City) received a first-place award at the 2012 ESRI Annual International User Conference for a desktop, mobile, and web geographic information system application he codeveloped with Ahmad M. Salah (PhD ’09).

1996 | Janae Nead Ballingham (BS ’96; Zackary; Gardnerville, Nev.), a middle school physical education teacher, was chosen by the Douglas County Education Foundation as Carson Valley Middle School Teacher of the Year and Douglas County Teacher of the Year. She serves as the president of the Nevada Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Rick E. Hansen (BA ’96, JD Seattle University ’00, LLM Georgetown University ’12; Jenna Knight [BS ’97]; Danville, Calif.) was promoted to assistant secretary and supervising counsel for Chevron. He also authored “Climate Change Disclosure by SEC Registrants: Revisiting the SEC’s 2010 Interpretive Release,” published in the Spring 2012 edition of the Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law.

1997 | Richard A. Stewart (BA ’97, JD University of Texas ’00; Rebekah Schill [’99]; Houston), a partner with Adams and Reese, has again been recognized among the Texas Rising
Stars for 2012 in the fields of business litigation, civil litigation defense, and general litigation.

1998 | J. Spencer Fluhman (BA ’98, MA University of Wisconsin ’06; Hollie Rhees [BS ’96]; Provo), BYU assistant professor of history, published A Peculiar People: Anti-Mormonism and the Making of Religion in Nineteenth-Century America.

2001 | Eric R. Carlson (BA ’01, JD ’05; Amy Anderson [BA ’05]; Beijing) was elected a partner in the law firm of Covington & Burling. He assists clients operating in China and other jurisdictions in Asia with anticorruption compliance and other aspects of international trade. David S. Wood (BS ’01; Ginnette Gardner [BA ’99]; West Bountiful, Utah) was promoted to chief actuary by EMI Health. Wood will review all financial liabilities of EMI Health, provide data analysis and pricing for all insurance renewals and products, and ensure the company’s compliance with the Affordable Care Act.

2002 | Spencer L. Bean (BA ’02; Ester Balderas [BS ’00]; Matzenbach, Germany) received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching from the National Science Foundation. William B. Tayler (BS ’02, MAcc ’02, MS Cornell University ’06, PhD Cornell University ’07; Sarah Davis [BS ’00]; Provo) received the IMA Research Foundation Emerging Scholar Award, which recognizes an exceptional manuscript in management accounting.

2007 | Mary Lawyer Alvarez (MS ’07; Craig; Bountiful, Utah), a faculty member at Salt Lake Community College, was announced in Community College Week as a recipient of a 2012 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Teaching Excellence Award. She has worked in the college’s division of natural sciences since 2007.

2008 | J. Dee Itri (BS ’08, MAcc ’08; Mesa, Ariz.) was appointed to manager in the National Tax Strategic Solutions group by the Phoenix office of Grant Thornton. Itri is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

2009 | Ahmad M. Salah (PhD ’09; Shereen [MA ’08]; Lehi, Utah) received a first-place award at the 2012 ESRI Annual International User Conference for a desktop, mobile, and web geographic information system application he codeveloped with Kurt H. Miller (BS ’94).

2012 | Jason L. Black (BS ’12, MAcc ’12; Centerville, Utah), a composer and pianist, spoke and performed
at the biennial convention for The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
