Stephen Whyte, a junior from Blackfoot, Idaho, majoring in political science, was recently chosen as the new Student Alumni Association/Class of 1997 president.
Whyte served on the SAA board last year as the chair of the College of Family, Home and Social Science Council. College councils assist in developing, promoting, and coordinating specific programs for college graduates prior to and following their graduation.
Merri Sorenson, the outgoing 1995–1996 SAA president, made great strides for the SAA with the theme “Reaching New Heights.” Under her direction, BYU hosted the District VII SAA Conference.
The conference, held February 29, drew more than 300 students from colleges and universities in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah.
Hyrum Smith, chair and CEO of Franklin Quest, delivered the keynote address, speaking on individual “belief windows.” Steve Young, quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers and a BYU alum, and Maren Mouritsen, dean of Student Life at BYU, also spoke to the alumni and delegates. Many participants attended a Music and the Spoken Word broadcast with special guest Margaret Thatcher.
Aspen Grove provided the setting for various workshops, leadership training experiences, and a concert featuring Vocal Point.
