Basketball

Big Dancers: The women’s basketball team won the WCC championship and entered the NCAA tourney with a no. 10 seed. The men’s basketball team made the biggest comeback in NCAA tournament history, overcoming a 25-point deficit to beat Iona College in the tourney’s opening round. POY: Forward Kristen Riley (’12) was named WCC Player of the Year. Joining Ainge: Matthew M. Carlino (’15) scored 30 points against USF, joining Danny Ainge (BA ’92), Mekeli Wesley (BS ’04), and Mark A. Bigelow (BS ’04) as the only Cougars to notch 30-point games as freshmen.

Football

New Scoreboards: State-of-the-art LED video walls sponsored by Nu Skin Enterprises will replace the old scoreboards and video screens at LaVell Edwards Stadium in time for the Sept. 1 home opener. All-Bowl Team: Offensive tackle Matthew Reynolds (BS ’11) and punter Riley S. Stephenson (’13) made ESPN’s 2011–12 All-Bowl Team.

Golf

Cougar to Watch: Zachary J. Blair (’13) made the 2012 watch list for the Ben Hogan Award, the top award in men’s college golf.

Track and Field

NCAA Record: Finishing second behind a professional 
runner at the Millrose Games, Miles B. Batty (’12) ran the indoor mile faster than any collegian has before, setting the new NCAA record with a time of 3:54.54. National Title: Nachelle Stewart Mackie (’13) was crowned the 800-meter champ at the NCAA indoor championships with a time of 2:03.30, breaking the BYU record in the event. She was one of 10 BYU athletes competing at nationals, eight of whom earned 
first-team All-America honors: Mackie, Batty, Cade D. Lindahl (’14), Rex G. Shields (’13), Ryan J. Waite (’13), Lacey Cramer Bleazard (’12), Sarah P. Edwards (’12), and Katie N. Palmer (’12). New Heights: At the New Balance Invitational, Christen Botteron Guenther (’12) broke a BYU record with a 4.30-meter pole vault.

Softball

One WAC Season: BYU will join the Pacific Coast Softball Conference in 2013 after playing out the 2012 season in the WAC. Pro Ball: BYU home run record holder Angeline Quiocho (’11) is now playing in the National Pro Fastpitch League.

Swimming and Diving

Conference Champs: The men’s and women’s swim teams both won the 2012 MPSF championships. Diver Brandon D. Watson (’12) earned MPSF Athlete of the Year. He and swimmer Hailey J. Campbell (’15) went on to compete at nationals.
