1951 | Ralph W. Hansen (BA ’51, MA ’54, MLS University of California, Berkeley ’70; Lillian Strong [BS ’50]; Boise, Idaho) donated World War II memorabilia to a new museum in Italy, where Hansen was stationed in 1946.

1956 | Leo W. Goates Sr. (MA ’56, JD Southern Methodist University ’66; Arcadia, Calif.), a former attorney of the U.S. Treasury Department, received the Gallatin Award for 40 years of federal service.

1958 | William L. Nixon (BS ’58, JD George Washington University ’62; Carol; Salt Lake City) took the oath of office as an immigration judge for the Salt Lake City Immigration Court.

1959 | H. George Frederickson (BA ’59, MPA University of California, Los Angeles ’61, PhD University of Southern California ’67; Mary Williams [BS ’57]; Shawnee Mission, Kan.), a professor of public administration at the University of Kansas, received the 2005 Irvin Youngberg Research Award in applied sciences. Dixie Ann Grimmett (BS ’59, MS Washington State University ’62, EdD ’79; Huntington Beach, Calif.), executive assistant to the president of California State University, Long Beach, received the university’s Advancement of Women for Administration Award.

1963 | John L. Quist (’63; Susan; South Jordan, Utah) has been named a regional stores manager for Advanced Comfort Technologies, the maker of IntelliBed. He has also received Scouting’s Silver Beaver Award.

1966 | W. Ray Luce III (BS ’66, MS ’68, PhD University of Virginia ’78; Mary Rogers [BS ’64]; Marietta, Ga.), director of the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, has been selected to be part of a historic preservation exchange to France.

1967 | James P. Banford (BA ’67, MA ’69; Elizabeth; Draper, Utah) is chair of the World Languages Department at South Texas College.

1969 | Les R. Smith (BA ’69, MPA ’80, PhD ’88; Elaine Wayment [BA ’95]; Gilbert, Ariz.) was named associate vice president of the Arizona State University Foundation. He is also a trustee for Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions.

1970 | James K. Andreasen (BS ’70, MS ’73, PhD Oregon State University ’75; Barbara; Ivins, Utah) retired after a 32-year ecological-research career with the federal government. He and his wife recently returned from a mission to Sydney, Australia.

1971 | Kelly C. Crabb (BA ’71, MPA ’73, JD Columbia University ’84; Janice McClure [’74]; South Pasadena, Calif.), partner at Morrison & Foerster, received the Outstanding Lawyer of 2005 Award from the J. Reuben Clark Law Society of Los Angeles. Michael K. Giles (BS ’71, MS ’71, PhD University of Arizona ’76; Terry Cosseboom [BS ’71]; Las Cruces, N.M.), a professor of electrical and computer engineering at New Mexico State University, has been elected to be a fellow of the International Society for Optical Engineering.

1972 | John A. Bascom (BA ’72; Lisa; Victorville, Calif.) has promoted the contributions of the Mormon Battalion to early California history for 30 years. For his efforts, he has received many honors. James A. Holtkamp (BA ’72, JD George Washington University ’75; Marianne Coltrin [BA ’71]; Salt Lake City) has been appointed president of the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation.

1974 | Donald A. Herrin (BS ’74, MOB ’78, PhD ’83; Kerry Cameron [BS ’71]; Salt Lake City) received the Superior Teaching Award for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Utah. Russell H. Thaden (BA ’74, MMAS U.S. Army Command and General Staff College ’87; Merry; Atchison, Kan.) retired after 34 years of active duty with the U.S. Army. He is now an assistant professor at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

1975 | Alan L. Avery (BS ’75, MBA University of Phoenix ’86; Cheryl Eskridge [BS ’79]; Dubuque, Iowa) was elected president of the Carnegie-Stout Public Library Board of Trustees. He is also the executive director of Medical Associates Health Plans and the president of Health Choices.

1976 | Brent L. Scott (BS ’76; Anne; Eden, Utah) has been named chief executive officer of Stephen’s Gourmet Hot Cocoa.

1977 | Robert D. Chappell (BS ’77; Jan Burningham [BS ’75]; The Woodlands, Texas), a Merrill Lynch financial advisor and a former bishop, was recently profiled in Registered Rep magazine, which discussed both his business success and his faith. Joyce Reed Stephenson (BS ’77; Michael; Medina, Ohio) earned a master of education degree from the University of Akron. She teaches fifth grade.

1978 | Timothy B. Anderson (JD ’78; St. George, Utah) was appointed to the board of trustees of the University of Utah.

1979 | Kim Novas Green (BA ’79; Charles [’79]; Murray, Utah), a former Ms. Provo and Mrs. Utah, has enjoyed a successful country singing career in Europe. Mark A. Hutchins (BS ’79, MA University of California, Los Angeles ’94; Debra Bradshaw [BS ’77]; Gilbert, Ariz.) received a master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University. He is a senior project manager at Intel.

1980 | Dale L. Edwards (BA ’80, MLIS ’90, Julie Rosa [AS ’75]; Greeley, Colo.) received a doctorate from the University of North Carolina and is now an assistant professor of broadcast journalism at the University of Northern Colorado. R. Craig Ford (BS ’80, MS ’81; Klea; Eugene, Ore.) received a doctorate of audiology from A.T. Still University of Health Sciences. He now works at the Eugene Hearing and Speech Center.

1981 | R. Ray Depew (BS ’81, MS Stanford University ’88; Valerie Kent [BS ’78]; Loveland, Colo.), after leaving a 20-year engineering career, has begun teaching secondary mathematics in Longmont, Colo. His wife, Valerie, is a consumer and family studies teacher in Loveland, Colo. Calvin S. Monson (BA ’81, MA University of Chicago ’85; Shawna; Chicago) has joined NERA Economic Consulting as a vice president in the firm’s Chicago office.

1982 | Chandra Jackson Moss (BA ’82, JD Southwestern University School of Law ’90; David [’89]; Newport Beach, Calif.) has been designated as a certified family law specialist by the State Bar of California. Jon A. Wilhelm (BA ’82, MBA University of Southern California ’84; Highland, Calif.) is the founder of the Continuation Shelby Mustang Program, which has produced several Shelby Mustangs, such as the G.T. 500E, also known as “Eleanor” of Gone in 60 Seconds.

1983 | Philip A. Mettra (BA ’83; Lou Ann; Irvine, Calif.) has been named vice president of marketing for Budget Blinds.

1984 | Peter J. Succo (MS ’84; Mary Maag [AS ’80]; Eugene, Ore.) received a doctorate in audiology from A.T. Still University of Health Sciences. He now works at the Eugene Hearing and Speech Center.

1985 | Glen R. Andersen (BS ’85, MS Massachusetts Institute of Technology ’87, PhD Massachusetts Institute of Technology ’91; Suzanne Bertch [BA ’86]; Albuquerque, N.M.) has joined Kleinfelder in its Albuquerque, N.M., office to lead the region’s geotechnical and construction materials testing departments.

1987 | Robert K. Burns (BA ’87; Ann Eliason [’92]; Glendale, Ariz.) received the 2004 Chairman’s Award at The Hartford Financial Services Group for his work with a special office set up to handle claims made after four hurricanes struck Florida and the South in fall 2004. Leslie A. Haacke (JD ’87; Cave Creek, Ariz.) will join the law firm of Jennings, Strouss, and Salmon, focusing her practice on securities, civil, and commercial litigation and appellate practice. Craig J. Tingey (BA ’87, MS Syracuse University ’90; Jill Hales [BS ’85]; Park City, Utah) has joined Galindo Consulting as vice president of consulting services.

1988 | Scott J. Burwell (BA ’88, MBA University of Utah ’04; Tonya Wilkey [’93]; Saint Charles, Mo.) has been named director of sales for the Bonneville St. Louis Radio Group. Bradley R. Cahoon (BA ’88; Jodie; Draper, Utah), a partner of Snell and Wilmer, has been elected chair of the American Lung Association of Utah. Zhang Jie (MA ’88, PhD ’92; Xuehong Lu [MLS ’89]; East Amherst, N.Y.) has been awarded a $1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study rural Chinese suicide. He has received the Chancellor Award for Excellence in Faculty Service from the State University of New York. Patrick J. Patterson (BA ’88; Kristina Farr [’88]; Higley, Ariz.) is an independent contractor to various North American companies, working to develop marketing, leadership, and management skills.

1989 | David B. Daughtrey (MBA ’89; Doe Musgrave [’93]; Mesa, Ariz.) has established Copperwynd Financial in Scottsdale, Ariz. Anthony A. Piña (BA ’89, MEd ’91, EdD La Sierra University ’05; Teresa; Gurnee, Ill.), coordinator of learning technologies at Northeastern Illinois University, was elected president of the Division of Distance Learning of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology.

1990 | Edwin M. Kellar (BA ’90; Lois; North Vernon, Ind.) received a master of library science degree from Indiana University.

1991 | Katherine McLaughlin Flynn (BA ’91, JD Georgia State University ’98; Michael; Acme, Pa.) received a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Pittsburgh. She is an editorial manager with LexisNexis. Kenneth R. Haycock (EdD ’91, MBA Royal Roads University ’04; Sheila; San Jose, Calif.), president of the Association for Library and Information Science, has been appointed professor and director of the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University. Michael B. Ottinger (BS ’91, MS ’93, PhD University of Texas ’97; Julene White [BS ’93]; Saint Joseph, Mo.) has been granted tenure and named associate professor of physics at Missouri Western State University. Vernon J. Richardson (BS ’91, MBA ’91, MAcc ’91, PhD University of Illinois ’97; Connie Beach [BA ’91]; Fayetteville, Ark.) was named the Ralph L. McQueen Chair in Accounting at the University of Arkansas.

1992 | Stephen W. Dyer (BS ’92, ME University of Michigan ’94, PhD University of Michigan ’99, MBA University of Michigan ’03; Tami Tu [MAcc ’90]; Pudong Shanghai, China) has been appointed manager of A.T. Kearney’s Shanghai, China, office. Rodney S. Morris (BS ’92; Kimberly Clark [’92]; Valencia, Calif.), a senior manager with Deloitte & Touche in Los Angeles, was named a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society.

1993 | Andrew W. Gilliland (BA ’93, JD University of Utah ’00, LLM University of Florida ’05; Ruth; Draper, Utah) has joined Parsons Behle & Latimer as a member of the real estate, banking, and finance department. Ronald D. Haas Jr. (BS ’93; Janice Hamilton [’92]; Centennial, Colo.) has joined PricewaterhouseCoopers as a partner in the Denver office.

1994 | Cathryn Carmode Lim (BA ’94; Marcelino [BS ’93]; Anniston, Ala.) published her first book, Full Hands, Full Heart, Full Circle, about the challenges and rewards of motherhood. Lisa J. Peck (BA ’94; Highland, Utah) has published 15 books, including a series called the CTR Club. Laura Vernon (BA ’94; MA Westminster College ’98; Salt Lake City) has joined the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah as public relations manager. She is the 2005–06 president of the Utah chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators.

1995 | Aaron M. Bujnowski (BS ’95, MS ’96; Julie; Frisco, Texas) received an MBA from University of Texas at Austin and has joined the Boston Consulting Group as a consultant in Dallas. Sheldon B. DeFriez (BA ’95; Centennial, Colo.) graduated from Metropolitan State College of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology. Josh M. Reid (BS ’95, MS Yale University ’97, JD University of Arizona ’00; Tamsen Burk [BA ’93]; Salt Lake City), an attorney with Parsons Behle & Latimer, has been appointed to the Utah State Board of Regents, the governing body for Utah higher education.

1996 | William A. Mackey III (BA ’96; Torrance, Calif.) is president of Oh, Rio! Productions, which won a Telly Award for a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the United Airlines commercial The Rose. Jason S. Russell (BA ’96; Kimberli; Spanish Fork, Utah) has joined NuSkin Enterprises as the communications manager for North America.

1997 | Nathan O. Greene (BS ’97, JD Franklin Pierce Law Center ’05; South Jordan, Utah) is an associate in Stoel Rives’ technology and intellectual property practice group. Christopher M. Johnson (BA ’97, MBA Pepperdine University ’05; Kjersten Woodley [BS ’97]; Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) has been appointed vice president of sales with Fidelity Investments, covering Southern California.

1998 | Michael D. Adams (BS ’98, MS Indiana State University ’01; Shannon Irvine [BA ’96]; Provo) has earned a doctorate degree in counseling psychology from Indiana State University. Ryan W. McKinley (BS ’98; Shawna Kidder [BS ’95]; Edmond, Okla.) was the recipient of the Peter Diamond Award, for most droid badges collected, as well as the Temura Morrison Award, for “keeping your bucket on,” during the 501st Legion’s Droid Hunt at the Star Wars Celebration III in Indianapolis. Timothy R. Kennedy (BA ’98, MBA University of Utah ’03; Melanie McLean [JD ’99]; Kaysville, Utah) has joined McCann Erickson in their Salt Lake City offices as strategy director for their Microsoft team.

1999 | Lance S. Lehnhof (BA ’99, JD ’02; Jennifer Bybee [BS ’99]; Orem, Utah) has joined the corporate group of the law firm Stoel Rives.

2000 | Brandon W. Sanderson (BA ’00, MA ’05; Orem, Utah) is publishing his debut novel, Elantris, which he wrote while earning his bachelor’s degree in English.

2001 | Bret M. Baldwin (PhD ’01; Julia Hanson [BS ’88]; Murphy, Texas) was elected to serve a three-year term as mayor of Murphy, Texas. Rufus H. Johnson (BA ’01, MA Monterey Institute of International Studies ’04; Juliet Lewis [BS ’01]; Falls Church, Va.) has been awarded the Presidential Management Fellowship by the United States Office of Personnel Management. Nikki F. Bybee (BA ’01; Norman, Okla.) was awarded a graduate fellowship by the University of Oklahoma’s School of Dance. Carlene Howard Williams (BFA ’01; Lucas; Wichita, Kan.) has illustrated the books Santa’s Stray and A Piano for Christmas, the proceeds from which support nonprofit organizations.
