Men’s Volleyball Nets National Championship

The BYU men’s volleyball team won the national championship May 8, making BYU only the second non-California school to capture the title. At UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, they swept second-ranked Long Beach State in three games (15-9, 15-7, 15-10). The match drew some 8,000 spectators and, judging from the cheers, at least half of them were BYU fans. Senior Ossie Antonetti was named the NCAA tournament MVP.

The Cougars were ranked No. 1 for most of the season and ended the year with a record of 30-1. The team will be featured more fully in the next issue of BYM.

Women’s Softball Gets NCAA Status

After 19 years as an extramural program, BYU women’s softball has become an NCAA sport.
“BYU is now ready to join the five other Mountain West Conference teams in Division I competition,” said President Merrill J. Bateman. “We are excited about this opportunity and fully expect to be competitive within our conference and the nation.”

Elaine Michaelis, director of women’s athletics, called this a major step forward for women’s sports at BYU. “We are grateful to the administration for providing more opportunities for women athletes,” she said. “This represents an important addition to the university’s athletic program.”
