When athletic friends Kristen Lee Briggs (BS ’06) and Anna Volkman realized their home state of New Mexico did not have any all-women triathlons, they decided to start their own. “We thought there would be some work involved,” Briggs admits, “but nothing like we are experiencing, and it is a lot of fun.” They chose the routes, got the permits, and are publicizing the event themselves. Their triathlon’s official motto is “Live well, Love more, Tri hard,” and Briggs says their mission is to empower women by building their self-esteem and helping them recognize their individual worth. “When we help women, they help their families and communities and shape a bright future for their children,” says Briggs. The triathlon will take place Aug. 27. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Camp Butterfly, a local nonprofit summer camp for children and young adults with special needs.
