You’ve probably heard of Jake Retzlaff, starting quarterback for BYU’s surprisingly successful 2024 Big 12 football team. You might even know his self-chosen nickname, “BYJew.” But Retzlaff’s uncommon place at BYU— one of only three Jewish students on campus —is about more than just sticking out.
“I came here thinking I might not fit in with the culture, so this will be a place where I can just focus on school and football,” Retzlaff told the Associated Press. “But I found that, in a way, I do fit. People are curious. And when everybody around you is so faith-oriented, it makes you want to explore your faith more.”
And thanks to his faith, Retzlaff is gaining further national attention. Now starring on the box of a popular Kosher brand’s unleavened bread—Manischewitz’s matzo—Retzlaff is finding ways to spread even more positivity for the Jewish community. Proudly wearing his Star of David necklace, Jake Retzlaff continues to lead BYU’s football team, striving to be an example for the next generation of Jewish athletes.
