Though she admits that no family is perfect, Laura Barlow (’11) describes hers as “crazy awesome.” As a teenager she drew inspiration from an old photograph of her brother on their father’s lap for an untitled mixed-media work of art (right). Nearly eight years later, she entered the work in the juried exhibit Nature and Nurture: Narratives of the Family, displayed in the Harris Fine Arts Center in October. To her surprise, it won first place. For Barlow, the piece represents the strengths of her family, despite their challenges. She says she and her siblings have had a “fantastic, blessed upbringing . . . and [have] been given all the opportunity in the world.”
