Humanity has been completely wiped out by an alien race, and Earth has stood uninhabited for some 400 years— that is, until three humans awake in an unknown desert. They soon learn that they were reborn, brought back by another, seemingly benevolent alien race. But why them? And why now?

Thus begins BYUtv’s latest scripted drama, Extinct, a sci-fi series from the minds of New York Times bestselling authors Aaron W. Johnston (BA ’99) and Orson Scott Card (BA ’75). The show follows two groups of reborn humans. One group has been reincarnated by a benevolent alien race that looks something like aquatic fireflies; the other group is controlled by parasitic aliens called Skin Riders that latch on to the humans’ brain stems.

To create a seemingly uninhabited world, director T. Ryan Little (BA ’00) (Saints and Soldiers) and crew set up camp among the red rock of southern Utah for many of the panoramic shots. For interior shots, the production team built a new set dubbed Area 51 at the LDS Motion Picture Studio in Provo. The crew combed military junk yards for props and fixtures to create an industrial feel.

Along with sci-fi standbys like advanced technologies, spaceships, and explosions, the show focuses on the fight to revive other humans, including the reborn humans’ family members. Extinct premieres Oct. 1.
