Decorating an Author: Michael O. Tunnell (BA ’73), a professor in the Department of Teacher Education, will help select the recipient of the 2009 Newbery Medal, an annual award presented to the author who best contributes to American children’s literature.

Moving Up: Richard L. Rowley (BS ’74) was appointed chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering, taking the place of W. Vincent Wilding (BS ’81). Timothy W. McLain (BS ’86) replaced Larry L. Howell (BS ’87) as the chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Musical Chairs: Shawn W. Miller (BA ’90) will replace Arnold H. Green (MA ’67) as the chair of the Department of History, and Darren G. Hawkins will take the place of Raymond V. Christensen (BA ’84) as chair of the Political Science Department. Unhealthy Friendships: A study conducted by assistant professor of psychology Julianne Holt-Lunstad
(BS ’94) shows that ambivalent and unpredictable friendships can elevate both stress level and blood pressure.

Setting the Scene: Eric A. Fielding (BA ’74) was named an honorable member of the International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects, and Technicians. Composing Words: Michael D. Hicks (BM ’80), professor of music, was selected to be the editor of American Music.
Health and Human Performance
On Their Toes: The Ballroom Dance Company received first place in the modern-and-Latin-formation-categories at the international Blackpool Dance Festival in Blackpool, England. Spreading the News: Health and Human Performance magazine debuted in August. The biannual magazine will highlight student and faculty achievement in research and creative works, teaching, and service.

Lectures On Demand: Faculty in the College of Humanities have developed a lecture series for BYU Broadcasting called Voices in the Human Conversation. After they are televised, the lectures will be available for on-demand viewing at the BYU Broadcasting Web site.
Law School
Career Credits: More than 30 percent of first-year law students had international externships (working for free in exchange for academic credit) over the summer. Law Legacy: The J. Reuben Clark Law School recently completed a DVD titled The Legacy of J. Reuben Clark that includes interviews with President Gordon B. Hinckley, President Thomas S. Monson, and President James E. Faust.
Life Sciences
Mormon Crickets: A group headed by J. Daniel Fenn (’08) sequenced the genome of the Mormon crickets, which plagued Utah’s early settlers, making it one of only 70 published insect genomes in the world. Accrediting Dietetics: Dietetics professor Nora K. Nyland (BS ’74) was elected chair of the American Dietetic Association’s educational accrediting board.

Climbing the Ranks: The Wall Street Journal recently ranked BYU’s MBA program first among regional schools, and U.S. News & World Reportranked the Marriott School of Management’s accounting program third in the nation.

Notable Nurse: Lynn Clark Callister (BS ’64), professor of nursing, was recently appointed to the International Advisory Council of the Fulbright Academy of Science and Technology. She also received the 2007 Distinguished Professional Service Award from the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses. Correction: In the summer 2007 issue of BYU Magazine, we misidentified a picture of Beth Vaughan Cole (PhD ’78). Cole was recently appointed dean of the College of Nursing.
Physical and Mathematical Sciences
Taking Their Seats: Ross L. Spencer (BS ’74) was recently appointed chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, along with Harold T. Stokes (BS ’71) as associate chair. In the Department of Geological Sciences, Scott M. Ritter (BS ’81) was named chair, and John H. McBride was chosen to serve as associate chair.

Temple Tome: David R. Seely (BA ’81), professor of ancient scripture, recently published Solomon’s Temple: Myth and History with William J. Hamblin (BA ’78), associate professor of history.
