The ways we connect with others are changing. We may no longer be meeting at the bowling alley, but we are connecting through websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. In fact, such social and business connections can be essential to our success.
Today more than 80,000 BYU alumni have created a personal profile on LinkedIn. They use this electronic card filing system to maintain relationships, help students find mentors, and create new business and career-building connections. More than 13,000 BYU alumni are also members of the official BYU Alumni Group on LinkedIn.
Cheryl Snapp Conner (BS ’79), managing partner of Snapp Conner PR, says, “LinkedIn is an essential tool for every business person, and having the BYU network available has made it easy to reconnect with the people I knew during and even after college who are associated with BYU. It has led to several great business opportunities.”
Social networks such as LinkedIn can be crucial to career building. One valuable LinkedIn connection is Scott R. Greenhalgh (BS ’86), the manager of Alumni Career Services at BYU. Greenhalgh has thousands of LinkedIn connections that he uses to help alumni and students find careers. “Everything comes back to networking,” he says, and LinkedIn is a great place to start.
