Calling All Cheerleaders

Cheerleaders

BYU cheerleaders from every decade since the 1950s have already joined the cheerleading alumni chapter.

All former cheerleaders, yell leaders, and song leaders are invited to join the BYU Cheerleading Alumni Chapter, a new affinity group designed to help past members of cheer squads perpetuate a legacy of unity through reunions, service projects, and other activities.

To locate potential members of the affinity group, Ashley Wilcox Stephens (’07), BYU assistant cheer coach, says committee members have created a Web site where alumni can update their records (cheer.aa.byu.edu).

Cheer squads

Former cheerleaders have created an alumni group to unite past and present cheer squads.

Stephens is chairing the group, with BYU head cheer coach Nicole McKeever Pratt (BS ’99) and former cheerleader Richard “Rique” A. Fuhriman (BS ’94) on the committee. Several committee positions remain open, and any former spirit leaders interested in being on a committee are invited to contact Stephens (littledixiepeach@yahoo.com).

“The list of former spirit leaders has several holes in it, and we hope we can locate our alumni who promoted the Y through their spirit on the field,” Pratt adds.

“We have many people who have graduated who contact us around Homecoming and want to get involved,” Stephens says. “We also have a wonderful history of doing well in competitive cheering programs. I would love to meet some of our national winners and learn about their experiences. Until now there really hasn’t been an avenue for those exchanges, and we want to provide that opportunity. We hope to have a presence at Homecoming in 2007 and other times of the year.”

Former spirit leaders from every decade since the 1950s have already joined the affinity group.

To participate in the affinity group, former yell leaders, song leaders, and cheerleaders can update their information at cheer.aa.byu.edu.
