Sky Dance

Brooklyn Jarvis Kelson's photo of a dancer in pink poses at the Salt Flats with mountains behind her. Because of the reflective water beneath her, it looks she is floating between the earth and the sky.

In the mirror of the Salt Flats, the horizon disappears. It’s just as the student photographer envisioned—a dancer floats in an impossible balance between the earth and sky. With a deep breath, Brooklynn Jarvis Kelson (BA ’24) lifts her camera and captures the moment.

This photograph is one of many that earned Kelson the title of Student Photographer of the Year by the University Photographer’s Association of America in 2024—for the second year in a row.

The mentorship of BYU Photo photographers Nathaniel R. Edwards and Jaren S. Wilkey (BA ’01), Kelson says, has been invaluable. “They always say, ‘There’s no growth in the comfort zone, and there’s no comfort in the growth zone.’ It’s always worth it to get up and go take that shot.”
