BYU to Buy the Y
BYU stamped its mark on the mountain east of campus in 1906 and has long maintained the Y trail. But the university has only leased, not owned, the upper two-thirds of the trail and the land the massive letter sits on. That will change in 2015, following passage of a bill cosponsored by Representative Jason E. Chaffetz (BA ’89) and Senator Orrin G. Hatch (BS ’59),
allowing BYU to buy the land from the federal government.
“We are very glad to see this bill pass and are grateful to all those who made it possible,” says BYU president Kevin J Worthen (BA ’79, JD ’82). “This landmark has stood as a welcoming symbol to all those who come to Utah Valley. . . . We look forward to sharing the trail to the Y with our neighbors, friends, and visitors.”
