Wyview Trailers Hit The Road

After almost 25 years of use, BYU’s Wyview trailer homes will be replaced with apartment buildings. Previously, the area only had 150 housing units; the plans for expansion will increase this number to 424, making better use of the space, said Brent Harker, director of public communications for BYU. The expansion will take place in four phases, which began June 1 and are estimated to be completed in the summer of 1998. When the dust settles there will be approximately 22 new apartment buildings and a new multi-purpose building, which will be used for area programming and as a meeting place for three LDS wards. Also, during the first phase of construction, the central building will be expanded on the east and west ends to include a convenience store, a laundry facility, and a housing office. These changes are necessary, Harker said, because married-student housing is one of the rarest types in the Provo/Orem area. He hopes the additional housing units will help the 8,206 married students who attend BYU. “Obviously putting in this many apartments won’t alleviate the problem—27.8 percent of the students at BYU are married. There will still be a crunch, but it will help,” said Dean Fairbank, assistant student life vice president for Student Auxiliary Services.
