In October BYU athletes wheeled kids down the BYU track, lifted others through the long jump, and formed a tunnel for the young athletes. It was all part of the annual Courageous Kids Invitational, an adaptive athletic event for children with limiting medical conditions founded by former pole vaulter Tammy Kirby Bowers (BS ’03).

“We teach kids that they can do things that maybe they didn’t know they could do,” says Bowers, who founded the event after her son was born with a rare and life-threatening genetic condition.

The event has created a community united by the joy of exploring their abilities. “Once you’re a courageous kid,” says Bowers, “you’re always a courageous kid.”
