Beginning fall semester 1999, BYU students must register for at least 12 credit hours–rather than 8.5 credits, as in the past—to be considered full-time students.
“The credit-hour increase will make the university’s full-time student definition consistent with that used in accreditation, federal financial aid, the NCAA, and federal immigration law,” says Noel B. Reynolds, associate academic vice president.
BYU has created a new “three-quarter-time” category for those who take between 9 and 11.5 credit hours. These students will be eligible for basic university benefits and will pay slightly less tuition than full-time students. The change will not affect scholarship recipients, who must take at least 14 hours, or students with disabilities. All students in their last semester–regardless of credits taken–will be eligible for full-time student benefits.
Also, BYU students can now use the Internet to register for classes. The telephone registration system is still available.
Internet registration became available for continuing students April 5. Incoming freshmen will register in July.
