1949 | Liona Larson Johnson (BS ’49; Draper, Utah) will celebrate her 105th birthday in December. She taught elementary school in Utah for 22 years.

1952 | Susan Nelson Hickenlooper (BA ’52; Monte; Southborough, Mass.) is the new president of American Mothers, an organization that preserves the moral and spiritual foundations of families.

1955 | Wilbur R. Wortham Jr. (BS ’55; Jacqueline; St. George, Utah), a retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Air Force, is serving his eighth full-time mission with his wife.

1964 | Gerald L. Crawford (BS ’64; Diane Snow [’64]; Fort Collins, Colo.) was honored as Realtor of the Year by the Fort Collins Board of Realtors and received an award from RE/MAX Rocky Mountain Region for the fastest growing real-estate office in the five-state intermountain area.

1965 | Robert H. Blackwell (BS ’65, MS ’93; Brenda Anderson [BA ’64]; Orem, Utah) received the Wilson W. Sorensen Lifetime Achievement Award from Utah Valley State College after 37 years of teaching in the school’s biology department.

1966 | Judy A. Turner (BS ’66; Midvale, Utah) is celebrating 25 years of service with Intermountain Health Care. She will retire next year from a 43-year nursing career.

1969 | Christine Davidson McClung (BA ’69; Richard; Rockford, Ill.) is the author of A Parable of Two Families: Keys to Successful Parenting. Patrick N. Mitchell (BA ’69; Ruth; Provo) has been appointed to the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel, which identifies taxpayer issues and makes the IRS more consumer friendly.

1972 | Dennis P. Codon (BA ’72, JD Southwestern University School of Law ’77; Manhattan Beach, Calif.) presided over the 90th commencement ceremonies of Southwestern University School of Law as the new chair of the school’s board of trustees. Richard W. Dutson (BA ’72, MA ’82; Geneva Brott [’78]; Alliance, Ohio) has been appointed acting vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college at Mount Union College.

Donald E. Ellison (BA ’72, MA University of Northern Colorado ’93; Susan Lauper [BA ’69]; Springfield, Va.) received the Silver Antelope Award from the Boy Scouts of America. James W. Petty (BA ’72, BS ’73; Mary Gleason [BA ’72]; Sandy, Utah) received the 2005 Donald Mosher Award from the Board for Certification of Genealogists. Donald T. Stapley Jr. (BA ’72; Kathleen; Mesa, Ariz.) has been elected second vice president of the National Association of Counties.

1974 | Donald A. Herrin (BS ’74, MOB ’78, PhD ’83; Kerry Cameron [BS ’71]; Salt Lake City) received the Superior Teaching Award for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Utah.

1975 | Orson Scott Card (BA ’75, MA University of Utah ’81; Kristine Allen [BA ’76]; Greensboro, N.C.) was honored by ForeWord Magazine when his book Rachel and Leah was named a finalist in the magazine’s 2004 Book of the Year Awards. K. Roger Williams (BA ’75, MOB ’77; Ana; Amarillo, Texas) was named site leader for the Bell Helicopter Military Assembly Center.

1976 | Ronald R. Bass (BS ’76; Mary; Moline, Ill.) was presented the Department of the Army Commander’s Award for Civilian Services and promoted to assistant director of community and family activities for the U.S. Army’s garrison at the Rock Island Arsenal. Jean Nelson Davis (BA ’76; Stan; Lake Oswego, Ore.) was curator of the Visual Arts Chronicle Exhibit for the 2005 Lake Oswego art festival. She has been appointed to the board of directors for the Lake Oswego Foundation for the Arts. Mel R. Pyne (BA ’76, MS University of Utah ’79; Michelle Howe [BS ’75]; Eugene, Ore.) has been named CEO for the Oregon Region of PeaceHealth. James P. Swanger (BA ’76, JD Willamette University ’79; Mary; Vancouver, Wash.), a commissioner for Washington’s Clark County District Court, received the Judge William Nevins Award for his “distinguished service in public legal education.”

1977 | Laura Roskelley Marble (BS ’77: Barry; Fort Worth, Texas) received a Master of Arts in teaching from Texas Woman’s University. Gerrit M. Steenblik (JD ’77; Judy; Phoenix) is counsel in the real-estate development, construction, and project-finance client-service group for Bryan Cave.

1979 | Ralph L. Clegg (BS ’79, MPA ’92; Diane Brown [’77]; Orem, Utah), deputy director of the Utah County Health Department, was presented with the Theodore Bruce Beatty Award by the Utah Public Health Association. Alison Davis-Blake (BS ’79, MOB ’82, PhD Stanford University ’86; Michael; Austin, Texas) was named dean of the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.

1980 | Stacy Burton (BA ’80, MA ’82, MA Cornell University ’87, PhD ’90; Reno, Nev.) was elected to a second term as chair of the Department of English at the Universty of Nevada, Reno.

1981 | Gene C. Schaerr (BA ’81, MA Yale University ’85, JD ’85, MPhil ’86; Martha Canty [’87]; Derwood, Md.) is head of the new appellate and critical motions practice group at Winston and Strawn in Washington, D.C.

1982 | Steven F. Faux (PhD ’82; Crystal Nunally [’82]; Des Moines, Iowa) received the Madelyn Levitt Teacher of the Year Award from Drake University. Kenneth A. Fischer (MA ’82; Carbondale, Ill.) received an Educator in the Newsroom Fellowship at KERO-TV, Bakersfield, Calif., from the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation.

1984 | Bryan W. Fields (BM ’84; Lesli; Denton, Texas) is the author of Lunchbox and the Aliens, a children’s novel to be published by Henry Holt and Co. in fall 2006.

1985 | Suzanne Young Wiley (BA ’85; R. Scott [BA ’99]; Sammamish, Wash.) was the researcher on the documentary Small Fortunes: Microcredit and the Future of Poverty, scheduled to air on PBS in the fall.

1986 | Andrew J. Scoggin (BA ’86, JD ’89; Elizabeth Worsley [BS ’87]; Boise, Idaho) gave testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce during a hearing on the Pension Protection Act.

1989 | Jason E. Chaffetz (BA ’89; Julie Johnson [BS ’90]; Alpine, Utah) has been appointed chief of staff to Utah Governor Jon Huntsman Jr.

1992 | Scott R. Rackham (BA ’92, MA Syracuse University ’94; Laura Hadfield [BA ’92]; Whitefish Bay, Wis.) has been named executive vice president of Friends of Milwaukee Public Television.

1994 | Devin S. Allred (BS ’94; Brooklyn; Sandy, Utah) is the executive director of the Wellington, a full-service independent and assisted-living retirement community in Salt Lake City, which was awarded the best of state for 2005.

1995 | Bud A. Cranor (BA ’95; Erin Porter [BS ’94]; Las Vegas) has been appointed to the Nevada State Board of Engineers. He was also named to the committee designing the Nevada state quarter for the U.S. Mint.

1996 | Kevin W. Hadlock (BS ’96, MS Northwestern University ’99; Camey Andersen [BA ’95]; Phoenix, Md.) has been named director of investor relations at Constellation Energy.

1997 | Aaron C. Brown (BA ’97, JD Harvard Law School ’00; Seattle) has joined Cozen O’Connor’s Seattle office as an associate in the insurance litigation department. Amy E. Dimond (’97; Conyers, Ga.) wrote My Country to Defend, based on the life of an immigrant U.S. soldier who died in Iraq in 2003. Timothy D. Tribe (MAcc ’97; Jennifer Dorny [BS ’94]; Oro Valley, Ariz.) has joined the Phoenix office of RGL Forensic Accountants and Consultants as a manager.

1999 | C. Dane Bass (BS ’99, PhD Purdue University ’04; Christie Barker [BS ’97]; Colorado Springs, Colo.) has been promoted in his position as physicist with U.S. Air Force Space Command. Leif L. Paulsen (BS ’99; Kristen Dalby [BS ’05]; Wauwatosa, Wis.) received his doctor of medicine degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. After his internship he will serve as a medical officer for the U.S. Navy. Richard A. Price III (BS ’99, MAcc ’99, MS Stanford University ’03, PhD ’05; Julianne Black [BS ’97]; Houston) has been named assistant professor at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice University.

Chantelle A. Turner (BA ’99; Salt Lake City) has joined the University of Utah Health Sciences Center public-affairs staff as a public-relations specialist and will serve as the editor of Medical Update.

2000 | Nathan B. Mathis (BA ’00, MEd ’03; Provo) is entering his third season as a member of the NCAA Division I Utah Valley State College baseball staff as third-base coach and recruiter. Markus L. Niepraschk (BS ’00; Emily Gerber [BA ’00]; Richmond, Va.) graduated summa cum laude and first in his class from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry.

2001 | Angela Atkin (JD ’01, Salt Lake City) has been named associate at the law firm of Van Cott, Bagley, Cornwall, and McCarthy. She will practice in the tax, estate, and benefit planning group. Olivia D. Birdsall (BA ’01; Washington, D.C.) is the author of Notes on a Near-Life Experience, which won the 2005 Delacorte Press Contest for a First Young Adult Novel. Marcus S. Cano (BA ’01; Escondido, Calif.) is the producer of the documentary Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath. Sarah L. Coffman (BS ’01, MBA Notre Dame ’05; Wabash, Ind.) was part of Notre Dame’s entrepreneurial LicketyShip team, which won first place at the McCloskey Business Plan Competition.

Michael B. Dorrough (BA ’01; Shanna Hubbard [BS ’00]; Milwaukee, Wis.) received a doctor of medicine degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. His residency will be in anesthesiology. Jonathan S. Shakespear (BS ’01; Liz Emery [BS ’00]; Milwaukee, Wis.) received a doctor of medicine degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. His residency will be in diagnostic radiology.

2002 | Stephanie S. Fowers (BA ’02; Provo) wrote Rules of Engagement, an LDS genre novel. It was number one for a week on Deseret Book’s national bestseller list. Jared A. Johnson (BA ’02; Stephanie Chapple [BS ’00]; Allen, Texas) received the Award of Excellence from the National School Public Relations Association for his work on the Allen Independent School District Web site, www.allenisd.org. Seth C. Lewis (BA ’02; Tiffany Gee [BA ’02]; Bay Harbor Islands, Fla.) has received a Fulbright research grant to study the effects and costs of terrorism on Spain’s economy. Bradley J. Nielson (BS ’02, MAcc ’02; Washington, Utah) has joined KempBurdick CPA’s and Advisors.

2004 | Daniel I. Dison (BA ’04; Emma Wright [BS ’04]; Winston-Salem, N.C.) and his partner David B. Mann (BS ’04; Winston-Salem, N.C.) have been chosen as 2005–06 N.C. Schweitzer Fellows.
