125 years ago: Brigham Young Academy adopts blue and white as the school’s official colors.
100 years ago: William H. Snell, for whom the Industrial Education Building is named, arrives on campus and begins teaching mechanical arts, engineering, mechanical drawing, and drafting.
William Snell, here with a drafting student in the 1940s, worked as an industrial arts professor at BYU for nearly 50 years. The Industrial Education Building, which opened in 1960, was named for him.

75 years ago: President Franklin S. Harris, on leave for just over a year to help Iran reorganize its agriculture department, returns to BYU.
50 years ago: The Alumni Association establishes the Karl G. Maeser Excellence in Teaching Award.
25 years ago: BYU fans storm the Cougar Stadium field after the football team beats no. 1–ranked Miami. Leading the team to its win is quarterback Ty H. Detmer (BS ’92), who is awarded the Heisman at the season’s end.
10 years ago: The remodeled George H. Brimhall Building reopens and becomes the new home of the Communications Department and its student news organization.
5 years ago: Cardinal Francis E. George speaks at BYU about religious freedom, saying that Catholics and Latter-day Saints are important partners in the defense of religious freedom in the public square.
