General Athletics
BYU won 16-of-19 conference championships and had 20-of-21 teams participate in postseason competition. The Cougars scored 708 points and finished No. 17 in the Sears Cup, an annual award given to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country based on points accumulated for placing in national championship competition. A men’s volleyball national championship, a runner-up finish by the women’s cross country team, and Elizabeth Jackson’s individual national championship helped the Cougars improve upon last year’s 18th-place finish.
Men’s Baseball
The Cougars (38-22) won the Mountain West Conference title–their first since the 1994 season. Pitcher Nathan R. Fernley, ’01–the winningest pitcher in theNCAA (16-3)–earned Second Team All-America honors and signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Indians. Relief pitcher Justin L. Su’a, ’06, was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team as chosen by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, and teammate Jeffrey L. Hiestand, ’04, a designated hitter, was an honorable mention selection.
Men’s Golf
Behind the play of its three seniors, Scott L. Miller, ’01, Jesse J. Hibler, ’01, and William G. Harvey, ’01, BYU claimed its first Mountain West Conference championship in May. The eighth-ranked Cougars ended their season with a 17th-place finish at the NCAA West Regionals.
Softball
BYU (35-26) won both the regular season and the Mountain West Conference tournament and made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. Freshman right fielder Janalisi Keohohou, ’04, was named First Team All-America by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Tennis
After the men’s team surprised the Mountain West Conference by winning the tournament as a No. 4 seed, BYU received an invitation to host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. The men’s team ended the season by losing a close match to Cal-Berkeley. The women’s team also swept the MWC tournament but did not advance in the NCAA Regionals.
