Catcher Lars L. Birkeland, ’02, was named to the 2001 National Baseball Congress World Series All-America Team.
Men’s Volleyball
Head coach Carl M. McGown, ’63, was named the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (AVCA) national coach of the year. McGown, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation coach of the year, led the Cougars to their second NCAA national men’s volleyball title with a 3-0 win over UCLA in the championship match. The formal presentation of the award will be made Dec. 13, 2001, in San Diego, Calif., at the AVCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball National Championship.
Track and Field
The United States Track Coaches Association named nine BYU athletes to its list of all-academic honorees for the 2001 season of outdoor track and field. The individual honorees for the Cougars were Jeffery W. Hansen, ’02, Holly G. Haguewood, ’03, Tara A. Haynes, ’00, Maret Komarova, ’04, Tara A. Northcutt, ’02, Sharolyn Shields-Thayer, ’01, and Lindsey A. Thomsen, ’01.
