1966 | Charles L. Wiener, ’66, MS American College of Pennsylvania ’95 (Nora Ann), North Logan, Utah, has retired from Allstate Insurance after 30 years as an agent, registered representative, manager, and insurance adjuster. He and Nora Ann have four children and six grandchildren. 

  

1968 | Stanley D. VerNooy, ’68, MA University of Maryland ’73 (Ann), Las Vegas, has been granted tenure as a faculty member in mathematics at the Community College of Southern Nevada. He has written four math books and worked as a computer programmer for 15 years. 

  

1971 | Gregory M. Stringham, ’71 (Merrily Harston, ’91), Lowville, N.Y., received the Outstanding Civilian of the Quarter Award at Fort Drum, New York, for his performance in the installation business office. He and Merrily have 8 children and 14 grandchildren. 

  

1972 | Larry K. Ainsworth, ’72, MPA ’74 (Laura Payne, ’73), Rancho San Margarita, Calif., president and chief executive officer of St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif., has been presented the Excellence in Leadership Award by the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. He and Laura have three sons. 

  

1973 | Grace E. Swenson-Peppard, ’73 (Robert), Manitowoc, Wis., is a retired school teacher who has served as the chief archivist and managed public relations for the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. Sydney Mitchell Peterson, ’73, MS Utah State University (USU) ’89 (Tom), Logan, Utah, has been named the assistant provost at USU. 

  

1975 | Gaylene Reynolds Rosaschi, ’75 (Jim, ’77), Santa Rosa, Calif., has been named principal of Marguerite Hahn Elementary School. She is completing a master’s degree in education administration at Sonoma State University. 

  

1976 | S. Richard Tolman, ’76 (Linda Burnett, ’75), Ballwin, Mo., has been appointed executive vice president and chief executive officer of the National Corn Growers Association. 

  

1977 | Stuart T. Johnston, ’77, EMBA Baylor University ’00 (Judy), Fort Worth, Texas, is teaching strategic management at Texas Christian University. 

  

1979 | Stephen C. Allison, ’79, MPT Baylor University ’80, PhD University of Texas at Austin ’94 (Cindy), Houston, a major in the U.S. Army, was selected to attend the Army War College beginning July 2001. Previously, he was an associate professor and director of the U.S. Army­Baylor University graduate program in physical therapy. J. Kimball Hansen Jr., ’79, MA Arizona State University ’90 (Janet Budge, ’79), Mesa, Ariz., completed a nine-day, 717-mile bicycle ride from Mesa, Ariz., to Salt Lake City, arriving in Utah for his daughter’s graduation from BYU. Hansen is the manager of community relations for Pinnacle West Capital. He and Janet have seven children. 

  

1980 | John S. Jarstad, ’80, MD University of Washington ’84 (Patricia Sigman, ’79), Federal Way, Wash., was recognized by the Metropolitan King County Council for humanitarian service to Africa, Indonesia, and his community. Working with the local Kiwanis Club, he collected more than 30,000 pairs of eyeglasses for people in need. 

  

1981 | Calvin S. Monson, ’81, MA University of Chicago ’85 (Shawna), Atlanta, has been appointed vice president of regulatory and government affairs at BellSouth International. Previously, he was director of international practice for a Washington, D.C., consulting firm. 

  

1982 | Craig D. Swenson, MA ’82, PhD Walden University ’95 (Michelle), Salt Lake City, has been named provost and senior vice president for academic affairs for the University of Phoenix. 

  

1983 | Carlos G. Roundy, MEd ’83 (Debrah), Rupert, Idaho, has been appointed to Idaho’s Professional Standards Commission by the State Board of Education. 

  

1985 | David A. Berry, ’85, PhD ’91 (Ellen Gee, ’87), Costa Mesa, Calif., has joined the faculty of the UCLA School of Medicine as an associate professor. He has an advanced degree in physics and postdoctoral training in voice. Shannon D. Brown, ’85, MS University of Idaho ’97 (Wendy), Paul, Idaho, has taught junior and senior high school and was named Idaho Professional Technical Teacher of the Year for 2000. He and Wendy have six children. Dan L. Burk, ’85, MA Northwestern University ’87, JD Arizona State University ’90, JSM Stanford University ’94 (Laurie Walbrecht, ’86), St. Paul, Minn., has been named the Julius E. Davis chair in law at the University of Minnesota. He and Laurie have a 9-year-old daughter. AnnaLee Jewkes Hunter, ’85 (James, ’87), Downey, Idaho, is a stay-at-home mother who does the computer work and decorating for the restaurant she and her husband own. They have five children and live in a century-old farmhouse that they remodeled. 

  

1986 | David M. Lucero, ’86, MOB ’88 (Kristy Pierce, ’85), Laie, Hawaii, is the new director of student activities and leadership development at BYU–Hawaii. Prior to accepting the position, he worked for 13 years in student leadership at BYU. 

  

1987 | Devin L. Gray, ’87, MD University of Texas ’92 (Kathy Thompson, ’89), Gilbert, Ariz., finished his residency in general surgery in 1997. He works at Maricopa Medical Center training surgery residents. He and Kathy have five children. 

  

1988 | Scott Burwell, ’88 (Tonya Wilkey, ’93), Fruit Heights, Utah, was promoted to national sales manager of KSL-TV, where he has been an account executive for 11 years. He was Bonneville International’s Account Executive of the Year in 1998. 

  

1989 | Kurt R. Hill, ’89, MS ’91 (Lani Wilcox, ’91), Mesa, Ariz., has been named department chair over social and behavioral sciences at Paradise Valley Community College. He has served for four years as president of the Central Arizona Chapter of the American Meteorological Society. Garth E. Reed, ’89, MAcc ’89 (CayLynne Carr, ’88), Riverton, Utah, senior auditor of the Church of Jesus Christ, received the William S. Smith Certificate of Excellence for his performance on the Certified Internal Auditor Examination. James V. Winkley, ’89, MD Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences ’93 (Jeannine), Potomac, Md., an anesthesiologist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, has become director of resident education at the hospital. Earlier this year he received the Army Meritorious Service Medal. 

  

1991 | Douglas L. Dearden, ’91 (Sandra Knight, ’89), Bountiful, Utah, is the founding partner of AND, an advertising and design firm that celebrated its fifth anniversary in the wake of winning several ADDY awards. Dearden leads the firm with two other BYU alums, Christy Christenson Anderson, ’90, and D. Scott Arrowood, ’88, both of whom are partners. Taylor G. Frederickson, ’91, MBA Vanderbilt University ’97 (Zan Woodhouse, ’91), Frisco, Texas, has been appointed manager of the Dallas branch office of GNB Industrial Power. He is responsible for all sales and service operations for the company’s line of motive power batteries and battery chargers for industrial lift trucks. David H. Sheen, ’91, MBA University of Arizona ’95, Mesa, Ariz., recently joined Johnson Estate Planning Services as an estate planner. He actively serves in the single adult program of his ward. 

  

1992 | Steven M. Cannon, ’92, MS ’94, PhD ’97 (Denise Robinette, ’93), Harvest, Ala., was awarded the Gas Turbine Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for a paper he co-wrote. Chad G. Daybell, ’92 (Tammy Douglas, ’93), Springville, Utah, has published Escape to Zion, the final novel of his Emma trilogy. He also recently accepted a position as area manager for Access Computer Products. 

  

1993 | L. JaNae Jones Barrow, ’93 (Mark, ’94), Phoenix, has received a master’s degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University. Tiffany Jones Cruz, ’93, (Errol), Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., has received a master’s degree in education from Concordia University. She will continue teaching kindergarten in the Tustin Unified

School District. Nicole Miller Deforge, ’93, JD University of Utah ’96 (Alexis), Salt Lake City, has joined the law firm of Van Cott, Bagley, Cornwall & McCarthy. She will focus her practice on intellectual property. Blake D. Edwards, ’93 (Shannon Baer, ’92), Kennewick, Wash., a patrol officer for the Kennewick Police Department, is founder and president of Digital Evidence, a computer forensics firm designed to help law enforcement agents, lawyers, and private citizens obtain computer evidence for criminal and civil investigations. Earnest Phillips II, ’93 (Annette), Las Vegas, formerly a strategic communications specialist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), is the school’s new director of marketing and public relations. Prior to his employment with UNLV, he worked with Weyerhaeuser. 

  

1994 | Mark O. Barrow, ’94, MBA Arizona State University ’96 (JaNae Jones, ’93), Phoenix, has been promoted to director of financial information systems for Advanced Prescription Card Services. Joshua D. Luke, ’94, MA California State University, Fullerton ’96 (Martine), Sparks, Nev., became a partner in BBC, an advertising and public relations agency. He is a doctoral candidate at the University of Nevada, Reno, and has managed public relations and marketing for professional athletes. 

  

1995 | Margo VanderBeek Gunnarsson, ’95, MBA State University of New York at Albany ’00 (Roy, ’96), Albany, N.Y., is the database services administrator for the management information systems department of the New York State Bar Association. She was a cum laude graduate of BYU. 

  

1996 | David W. Childs, ’96 (Jennifer Stead, ’97), Midvale, Utah, is the new creative director at the advertising agency of Selph and Smith. Previously, he was the creative director for e-automate Corp. Eric D. Howard, ’96 (LeAnn Cunningham, ’95), Portsmouth, N.H., received a master’s degree in landscape architecture from Utah State University and has accepted a position as a principal at Hoover Biegel Landscape Architecture. 

  

1997 | Jason H. Eves, ’97 (Rachelle Ward, ’95), Germantown, Md., was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and has graduated from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Eves is in residency at Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center in San Antonio. David P. Harper, ’97 (Elaine Hales, ’97), Spanaway, Wash., has graduated from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and is in residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Fort Lewis, Wash. 

  

1998 | Bevan D. Blake, ’98, (Kristen Horton, ’94), Salt Lake City, graduated cum laude with a master’s degree in physical therapy from the University of Utah and is pursuing a career in physical therapy. Elisa Nummela Lambourne, ’98, MAcc ’98 (Richard, ’98), Midvale, Utah, joined the audit division of Arthur Andersen following her BYU graduation and has received her license to practice as a certified public accountant. 

  

1999 | Heidi Bitter Brady, ’99 (Bill, ’02), Provo, is a donor liaison for the LDS Foundation. She is newly married and is pursuing a master’s degree from BYU’s Marriott School of Management.

Douglas P. Larsen, ’99 (Molly Hulihan, ’99), Salt Lake City, a second-year medical student at the University of Utah, has received the 2001 Saul R. Korey Medical Student Essay Award for research in experimental neurology. In May he was honored at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual conference in Philadelphia. Tanya Smith Shulte, ’99 (Todd), Brentwood, Calif., received the James Madison Award from the Society of Professional Journalists–Northern California Freedom of Information Committee. She was recognized for a group of stories that uncovered violations of California’s Brown Act at a local college. 

  

2000 | Donevan B. Neider, ’00 (Christine Payne, ’00), Ann Arbor, Mich., is pursuing a master’s degree in social work at the University of Michigan. Christine gave birth to triplet girls in December 2000.
