1959 | H. George Frederickson, ’59, MPA UCLA ’61, PhD University of Southern California ’67 (Mary Williams, ’57), Lawrence, Kan., was appointed the John G. Winant Visiting Professor of American Government at the University of Oxford.

1960 | Leonard E. Graham, ’60 (Beverly Armstrong, ’61), Farmington, Utah, was awarded the National Chairman’s Award by the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. Graham is general agent of the company’s Utah agency and managing partner of The Cambridge Financial Center.

1963 | Robert E. Wilcox, ’63 (Louise), Alpine, Utah, was appointed to the board of directors for AAA of Utah, Nevada, and Northern California. He is president of R. E. Wilcox and Company.

1967 | Helene Borresen Holt, ’67 (Lawrence, ’67), Provo, received the Best True Story 2003 Award for “Exiled,” a screenplay, at the Thunderbird International Film Festival. Two of her other screenplays, “Phantom Justice” and “Take to the Sky,” were finalists.

1970 | Steven W. Allen, ’70, JD Arizona State University ’73 (Linda Tanner, ’70), Mesa, Ariz., received an honorable mention Glyph Award from the Arizona Book Publishing Association for his book, Founding Fathers: Uncommon Heroes.

Clifford L. Whetten, ’70, MEd University of Texas at El Paso ’73, PhD Texas A&M University ’79 (Rosalyn Hatch, ’70), San Antonio, Texas, professor of educational administration at Texas A&M University, received a Distinguished Achievement Award from the university for contributions to continuing and extension education.

1971 | Robert M. Egan, ’71, MS ’73 (Kathryn White, ’71), Sandy, Utah, a former vice president with IBM, was named director of institutional research and math and social sciences coordinator at the LDS Business College.

1973 | Terry A. Hinch, ’73, MA ’75, PhD University of Maryland ’89 (Paget), Bethesda, Md., a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University graduate business school, was honored with the 2003 Dean’s Scholar Award for his work in international crisis communication.

1974 | Barbara Zuknick Renick, ’74 (Leonard, ’68), Brea, Calif., recently published Genealogy 101: How to Trace Your Family’s History and Heritage,commissioned by the National Genealogical Society to celebrate its 100th birthday.

1975 | Richard M. Atwater, MA ’75 (Katya), Palm Harbor, Fla., a former BYU professor of religion, published Jesus Chris and Joseph Smith: An Enduring Partnership.

1976 | Stewart E. Goesch, ’76, MPA ’78, MS U.S. Army War College ’00 (Mildred Allred, ’74), Lake Ridge, Va., was appointed chief of staff for the Reserve Forces Policy Board in the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon.

1977 | Gordon J. Johnston, ’77, MM ’79, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on the faculty at St. Paul University, was made a fellow of the Graduate Theological Foundation in recognition of his work in the area of English sacred choral music. Steven P. Piersanti, ’77 (Kate, ’76), San Pablo, Calif., received the Champion of Workplace Learning and Performance Award from the American Society for Training and Development. He is the president and founder of Berrett-Koehler Publishers.

1981 | Michael D. Carter, ’81 (Sandra), Woodland Hills, Utah, was promoted to executive vice president of VitalSmarts, with responsibility for sales and operations. Steven B. Gibby, ’81 (Pamala), Las Vegas, Nev., received an Emmy Award from the Pacific Southwest Chapter of the National Television Academy for his work as director of the Las Vegas Stampede television program. He is the president of 2Reel Media Group. Reed B. Markham, ’81, MA ’82 (Lorena), West Jordan, Utah, and his wife are pleased to announce the birth of their baby girl, Annalisa, May 27, 2003.

1983 | Brian L. Bingham, ’83, MS ’85, PhD ’90 Florida State University (Cynthia Doerfler, ’86), Anacortes, Wash., received the Diversity Achievement Award for his work in promoting the education of under-represented students in the sciences at Western Washington University. Scott C. Florence, ’83 (Julie Cox, ’82), San Clemente, Calif., was appointed Southern California sales manager of Tahitian Noni International. Michael Tatum, EdD ’83 (Susan Howell, ’01), Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, is the president of the College of Micronesia-FSM, a six-campus college spread out through an area of the Pacific as large as the United States.

1984 | Jim J. Perez, ’84, MD University of California, San Diego ’88 (Jony), Bellingham, Wash., spent a week in Guatemala with a nondenominational medical mission.

1985 | Thomas M. Dunford, ’85, JD University of Minnesota ’88 (Susan Fillerup, ’82), North Bend, Wash., a senior member of the Cozen O’Connor law firm, is relocating to the firm’s new Denver office.

1986 | Charles J. Hess, EdD ’86 (Linda Hornberger, ’85), Kailua, Hawaii, published his first book, Prof. Blood and the Wonder Teams: The True Story of Basketball’s First Great Coach, in September. Lee E. Johnson, ’86 (Michelle), Alpine, Utah, a punter in the NFL for the last 18 years, joined the board of directors at the Gathering Place, a nonprofit addiction treatment agency in Utah County. He has also been a spokesman and volunteer at Wasatch Adaptive Sports for 16 years.

1987 | R. Joel Ankney, ’87, JD College of William and Mary ’91 (Jennifer Merrill, ’90), Virginia Beach, Va., is opening his own law office in Norfolk, Va.

Douglas W. Hedger, ’87 (Tiffany Close, ’89), Henderson, Nev., is a new judge with the Henderson Municipal Court. Michele Knudson Spackman, ’87 (Phillip), Mount Vernon, Wash., is project manager with Trammell Crow Company in their Healthcare Services Division. She passed the NCIDQ interior design licensing examination and published her first article in Health Facilities Management magazine. Brett C. Walker, ’87, MOB ’90 (Kristin Wrigley, ’99), Provo, joined VitalSmarts as chief marketing officer and vice president of marketing.

1991 | Ronald A. Barker, MA ’91 (Heidi), La Palma, Calif., is the assistant commissioner of the Pac-10 Conference, where he oversees governance and enforcement issues. Paul Leslie Beckett, ’91 (Melissa Jarvis, ’91), Fort Wayne, Ind., received a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the University of Health Sciences and will complete a postdoctoral residency in family medicine at the Ft. Wayne Medical Education Program.

Allen K. Bingham, ’91, MBA University of Texas at Arlington ’95 (Corina Bowen, ’91), Medina, Ohio, completed a doctorate in nutrition at Texas A&M University and was named director of research at Bil-Jac Foods. Laura Mason Brotherson, ’91 (Kevin, ’94), Meridian, Idaho, has created a website to strengthen marriages and families (www.strengtheningmarriage.com), which showcases a book she is writing, And They Were Not Ashamed: Strengthening Marriage through Sexual Fulfillment.

1992 | Brian R. Kay, ’92 (Lori Goodwin, ’88), Blackfoot, Idaho, completed a master’s degree in public administration at Idaho State University. As operations manager for Fox 31 TV station, he produced public service announcements to promote the use of designated drivers.

Catherine Mulder Lundell, ’92, MS ’94 (Randy, ’92), Fort Benning, Ga., completed a doctorate in marriage and family therapy at BYU in August 2002. She worked at LDS Family Services for five years and is now in private practice. Randy R. Lundell, ’92 (Catherine Mulder, ’92), Fort Benning, Ga., graduated with honors from Western University of Health Sciences with a doctorate in osteopathic medicine; he is now in a family medicine residency in Columbus, Ga., at Martin Army Community Hospital. Richard Saunders, MLS ’92 (Carrie), Martin, Tenn., published A Yellowstone Reader: The National Park in Popular Fiction, Folklore, and Verse, an anthology of Yellowstone-related fiction.

1994 | Andrew P. Breksa III, ’94, PhD University of Texas at Austin ’98 (Laura Hansen, ’94), Richmond, Calif., is a research chemist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He and his wife are expecting their fourth child in October. Arthur T. Johnson, ’94, MM ’96, DMA University of Wisconsin ’02 (Mary Ellen Mika, ’89), Howards Grove, Wis., is an assistant professor of music education at Lakeland College and performs regularly as a solo pianist.

1995 | Ty J. Allen, ’95 (Heather Ludlow, ’97), Lindon, Utah; Douglas O. Baird, ’95, MBA ’99 (Kristine Spencer, ’95), Pleasant Grove, Utah; and Thomas H. Karren, ’96 (Carisa Ball, ’95), Alpine, Utah, are founders of WingateWeb, a high-tech company serving customers like HP, Intel, and Novell. About 80 percent of their 30 employees are BYU graduates. Armondo De Carlo, MS ’95, Fredericksburg, Va., joined the Department of the Navy Acquisition Program as a mechanical engineer at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Va. Jennifer Buckner Leigh, ’95 (Matthew, ’97), Tucson, Ariz., completed a master’s degree in library science at the University of Arizona with a 4.0 GPA while raising two boys.

1996 | Todd S. Coleman, ’96, MM Eastman School of Music ’99, DMA Eastman School of Music ’02 (Tiffaney Smith, ’94), Grinnell, Iowa, joined the music faculty of Grinnell College as a Mellon Fellow. His music has been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra and Buffalo Philharmonic, and two recent commissions will premiere in New York this fall.

1997 | Noel T. Fehr, ’97 (Susan Wallace, ’97), Manchester, Mo., has joined Coldwell Banker Commercial as a sales and leasing associate, where he handles transactions for all general types of commercial real estate. Norma Jean Gile, ’97, Richmond, Vt., a registered nurse at the Vermont Regional Diabetes Center and Endocrinology Clinic, has completed the exam and requirements to become a certified diabetes educator. Ryan L. Marshall, ’97, MS ’99, JD ’02 (Tonya Nelson, ’97), Lehi, Utah, a patent attorney with Pasons Behle & Latimer, was a coauthor of a research article published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Brian W. Merkley, ’97 (Leslie Crosland, ’92), McKinney, Texas, joined the corporate risk management team of Koch Industries.

1998 | Jared C. Pearce, ’98, MA ’00 (Jaime Gray, ’00), Lafayette, La., received a doctorate in English from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Jonathan F. Richards, ’98 (Lacy Burton, ’99), Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and was commissioned as a captain U.S. Air Force. Elena Eliseeva Slowinski, ’98, MEd ’01 (Patrick ’96), Orem, Utah, is marshalling an effort to bring Larisa Brusnitsyn, a Russian woman with a degenerative hip, and her son Dmitri, who has brain cancer, to the United States for treatment.

1999 | Gary A. Christopher, ’99, MS ’01 (Elizabeth Eldridge, ’96), Denton, Texas, presented a paper at the International Society of Biomechanics Congress in New Zealand. He is a doctoral student at Texas Woman’s University. Benjamin T. Dyches, ’99 (Jennifer Bentley, ’99), Evergreen, Colo., completed a dental degree at Case Western Reserve University and received the Stanley M. Koobation, DDS, Award for outstanding clinical skills. George W. Huber, ’99, MS ’00 (Leslie Albrecht, ’98), Madison, Wis., was the lead author of an article in the journal Science. He is a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin. R. Tyler Johnson, ’99 (Emily Dawson, ’00), Lubbock, Texas, graduated with honors from Texas Tech University Law School and has accepted an associate position with Brown McCarroll in Dallas. Adam E. Whitten, ’99 (Kristen Sonne, ’99), Durham, N.C., graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law and began practicing with Hedrick, Eatman, Gardner, and Kincheloe in September.

2001 | Doug T. Jolley, ’01, Provo, was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft. In the 2002 season he caught 32 passes for 409 yards and scored two touchdowns.

2003 | Jennie K. Ashworth, ’03, North Ogden, Utah, was the 2003 Days of ’47 queen for Utah’s Pioneer Day festivities.
