As part of BYU Women’s Conference 2000, more than 10,000 conference goers participated in a day of service on April 26.
While the Red Cross collected 1,402 units of blood, volunteers completed 400 lap quilts for the American Cancer Society, packed 3,000 migrant school bags for the Utah State Office of Education, compiled 6,000 kits for the homeless, and stuffed 90,000 packets for the American Heart Association, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the Utah Food Bank. They also stuffed 15,000 bunnies and bears for local hospitals, police and fire departments, and crisis centers.
But that wasn’t all. By the end of the day of service, volunteers had prepared 2,000 quilts and compiled 2,500 newborn kits, 45,000 hygiene kits, and 7,500 school kits for the LDS Humanitarian Center. They also donated more than 200,000 buttons and enough coats to fill five semi-trailer trucks.
Then, to cap the service event, organizers of the conference donated proceeds from its “Women of Light” musical celebration to help build Lewis Hall, (a replica of the building that first housed Brigham Young Academy) at This Is The Place Heritage Park in Salt Lake City. The hall will house a historical library as well as ongoing service projects and humanitarian efforts.
