The Short List

Five things you won’t want to miss.

Beholding Salvation

Fa06_2539Exploring visual representations of Jesus Christ through the centuries, the Museum of Art will display Beholding Salvation from Nov. 16, 2006, to June 16, 2007. The exhibition will include more than 150 works, including art by Rembrandt, Carl Heinrich Bloch, Albrecht Dürer, and Minerva Teichert. The museum will host its biennial Art, Belief, Meaning Symposium on the exhibition’s opening day, Nov. 16.

Christmas Around the World

Fa06_2540In flashes of brilliant color, costumed dancers will celebrate Kerstmis, Noël, Weihnachten, Navidad, and even Christmas on the Marriott Center stage on Dec. 1–2. This annual concert by the International Folk Dance Ensemble draws thousands of spectators, including busloads of schoolchildren for a Friday matinee.

Shooting for a Championship Goal

Fa06_2541In its 2005 season, the women’s soccer team racked up an impressive 15-1-3 record and looked to be a top contender at the NCAA championship competition. But surprise losses in post-season play ended the team’s run earlier than expected. The Cougars hope to reverse their 2005 tournament fortunes at this year’s Mountain West Conference Tournament in Salt Lake City on Nov. 1–4.

Food Fight vs. UtahFa06_2542

As the Wasatch Front’s red-and-blue rivalry builds toward the annual gridiron competition (Nov. 25, this year), the schools’ alumni associations wage a contest to see which can collect the most (in food or funds) for Utah’s food banks. For two weeks, donations are accepted at the BYU Bookstore, at food bins around campus, and online.

Remembering the Rescue at the Sweetwater

Fa06_2543Produced by Lee Groberg and BYU Broadcasting, Sweetwater Rescue will air on PBS stations nationwide on Dec. 18. The documentary tells the story of the last two handcart companies to cross the plains in 1856. A companion book, written by Heidi S. Swinton, features original art created by more than 40 artists, including about 30 who have attended or taught at BYU.
