Men’s Baseball
Senior shortstop Ranger J. Wiens, ’04, was given honorable mention by CollegeBaseballInsider.com on its 2004 preseason All-America team. Wiens is also a 2004 third-team Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-American. During his junior year the Cougars’ cocaptain had a .405 season batting average and hit 25 doubles.
In January 2004 former BYU baseball coach and athletic director Glen C. Tuckett, ’62, became the American Baseball Coaches Association’s chairman of the board.

Gary D. Pullins, ’69, former BYU baseball player and coach, was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in January 2004. In his 23 seasons as the Cougar’s head coach, Pullins compiled a 913-462-6 (.663) record. His total of 913 victories ranks 30th in all-time victories by NCAA baseball coaches.
Men’s Basketball
The John R. Wooden Award Midseason Committee selected senior center Rafael Araujo, ’04, as one of the top 30 candidates for the Wooden Award Player of the Year and All-America Team. In addition, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) selected Araujo to one of the NABC division I all-district teams, which recognize the country’s best men’s collegiate basketball student-athletes.
Football
Coach Gary D. Crowton, ’83, hired Jeffrey D. Grimes as the offensive-line coach for the Cougars. Grimes was previously the offensive-line coach and running-game coordinator for Arizona State.
Track
During the annual Robison Invitational on April 24, 2004, BYU will name the track and field complex in honor of former BYU track and field head coach Clarence F. Robison, ’49, the men’s coach from 1949 through 1988. Robison’s teams won 18 conference championships and tied for the NCAA national championship in 1970.
At the second annual University of Washington PAC-10 Invitational, the BYU men’s and women’s track teams qualified nine athletes to move on to nationals.
Freshman Amber N. Harper, ’07, finished 3rd in the USA Track and Field Cross Country Junior Women 6K Championships, earning a spot on the U.S. junior national cross country team. Harper will be one of six junior women athletes to represent the United States at the 32nd IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Brussels, Belgium.

Men’s Volleyball
BYU senior Fernando F. Pessoa, ’04, was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men’s National Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 15 to Feb. 21. The outside hitter averaged 6 kills, 2.33 digs, and .5 blocks per game during that span. He hit .681 for the week, averaging 6.42 points per game during two sweeps of 11th-ranked Stanford. He had previously been named National Player of Week and MPSF Player of the Week, both in January.
Women’s Soccer
Soccer Buzz Magazine recognized senior All-American Aleisha Cramer Rose, ’04, and freshman teammate Nicole C. Jensen, ’07, for their outstanding play in the 2003 season. Rose, a four-time All-American, was named a second-team All-American and a first-team All-West Region athlete for 2003. Jensen received third-team Freshman All-America and third-team All-West Region honors.

Women’s Volleyball
Women’s athletic director and former BYU volleyball coach Elaine Michaelis, ’60, was in the inaugural class of coaches inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame. One of 23 inductees, Michaelis compiled 887 wins in her 40-year coaching career, ranking her second all-time in NCAA Division I volleyball. She has the most wins among female coaches in any women’s NCAA sport.
