Defensive Players of the Year: Women’s senior Mindy Nielson Bonham (’11), right, and men’s senior Jackson D. Emery (’11)—the guard who stole the career steals record from BYU great Danny R. Ainge (BA ’92)—each earned the title of MWC Defensive Player of the Year. 200 Wins: Going 15-1 in the regular season, the women’s basketball team helped Jeff R. Judkins, MWC Coach of the Year, to his 200th career victory. After securing the regular-season MWC title, the team lost to Utah in the MWC tourney. In the Women’s National Invitation Tournament, the Cougars beat Utah State 102–63 to advance to the Sweet 16, where they lost to USC.

Football

Return to Cowboy Stadium: On Oct. 28 the Cougars will face Rose Bowl Champion TCU in Dallas Cowboys Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN. Staff Changes: BYU quarterbacks coach Brandon G. Doman (BA ’02) was promoted to offensive coordinator, and graduate assistant Kelly S. Poppinga (BS ’07) was promoted to outside linebackers coach. Joseph P. DuPaix, hired from Navy, is the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator, and former BYU receiver Ben G. Cahoon (BS ’98) was hired as the receivers coach. Assistant head coach Lance Reynolds (BS ’80) has taken on the coaching of tight ends, and secondary coach Nick Howell now has responsibility for special teams.

Softball

National Coaches: Head coach Gordon R. Eakin and associate head coach Vaughn T. Alvey were named to the USA Softball Women’s National Team coaching pool. UCLA Upset: In March the Cougars upset the defending national champion and no. 9–ranked UCLA Bruins in a 6–4 win.

Swimming and Diving

Watson Does It Again: Brandon D. Watson (’12) picked up his second career 1-meter national title at the USA Diving Winter National Championships in February.

Volleyball

New Record: Senior Kevin M. Sagers (’11) set a BYU record with eight service aces in a single match in a February game against Loyola Marymount.
