Baseball

Three and Out: Shortstop Andrew J. Law (’11) performed an unassisted triple play in the MWC Tournament. It was the fourth triple play in BYU history and Law’s second. Major Leaguers: Matthew H. Neil (’11), who pitched the Cougars’ first shutout at home since 1976, signed with the Florida Marlins. Pitcher Taylor J. Cole (’13) signed with the Toronto Blue Jays. Both were drafted in the 29th round.

Diving

Around the World: Brandon D. Watson (’12) placed 16th in the NCAA diving championship 3-meter preliminaries despite a herniated disc in his back. He went on to represent the United States in Germany at the FINA Grand Prix, placing 22nd in his international debut, and will dive at the World University Games in China in August.

Tennis

Conference Champs: The men’s tennis team went undefeated in regular season play and claimed its second-straight MWC title. Patrick B. Kawka (’14) won Mountain Region Rookie of the Year; Zack S. Warren (’09), Mountain Region Assistant Coach of the Year; and Brad D. Pearce (’99), MWC Coach of the Year.

Track and Field

Elite Eighth: The men’s track team placed eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Leif Arrhenius (’11) finished second in shot put and discus; Chris C. Little (BS ’11) and Victor R. Weirich (’13) finished third and fourth, respectively, in pole vault; and Miles Batty (’12) finished seventh in the 1,500-meter. Quick Thinker: Capitol One named Miles Batty the Academic All-American of the Year in men’s track and field. The neuroscience and exercise science major has a 3.95 GPA.

Volleyball

Best Blocker: Two-time All-American Futi G. Tavana (’12) was named Off-the-Block Blocker of the Year with a season-best 1.52 blocks per set. More All-Americans: Outside hitter Taylor L. Sander (’14) and opposite hitter Robb L. Stowell (’11) received All-America honors. New Coach: Shawn L. Olmstead (BA ’05) is the new head coach of the women’s volleyball team, taking the helm after the resignation of Shay Goulding.
