Baseball

Three-time Third-Team All-American Benjamin R. Saylor (’07) signed as a free agent with the New York Mets. He currently plays for the Mets’ Gulf Coast League rookie team in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

BYU’s 2005–06 baseball media guide has the best cover in the nation, according to the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Golf

Former Cougar golfer Dean H. Wilson (BS ’92) won the 2006 International at Castle Pines in Colorado on Aug. 13, his first victory at a PGA Tour event.

The BYU men’s team finished 15th at the 109th NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship.


Rachel K. Newren (’07), R. Jacob Ellison (’07), and Daniel R. Summerhays (’08) were all named Honorable Mention All-Americans by the Golf Coaches Association of America. For Newren and Ellison it was their second such honor and for Summerhays it was his first.


Nicholas J. Becker (’07) and Natalia Jimenez (’09) were named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar team.

Swimming and Diving

At the NCAA National Championships in Georgia, Brett A. Allen (’07) finished 12th overall in the 50-yard freestyle and Angela Goodson (’08) finished 14th in the 100-yard fly. Both swimmers earned Second-Team All-America honors.

Track and Field

Joshua E. McAdams (’07) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2006 NCAA National Track and Field Championships. McAdams, along with an All-America performance by freshman hurdler Christopher L. Carter (’09)—who finished third in the 400-meter hurdles—helped the BYU men finish tied for ninth place at the national meet.

When the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the All-Academic Track and Field teams, BYU’s men’s team had the seventh-highest average GPA in the nation with 3.15 and the women’s team had the 13th highest with 3.34.

Men’s Volleyball

Tom L. Peterson (’78) resigned as head coach on Aug. 31. Assistant coaches Shawn E. Patchell (BA ’93) and Ryan M. Millar (BS ’03) will lead the team until a new head coach is chosen.
