Athletics
A key and check presentation, as well as a ribbon-cutting ceremony, officially marked the completion of Cougar House II on July 16. Cougar House is an annual Utah Valley Home Builders Association project designed to raise money for athletic scholarships at BYU.
Baseball
The Cougars won the Mountain West Conference (MWC) tournament, advancing to the NCAA post-season. BYU won 14 of its final 20 games, finishing with a 31-31-1 record.
Men’s Volleyball
Thomas L. Peterson, ’78, has been named the head coach of the BYU men’s volleyball program. Peterson, a native of Orem, Utah, comes to BYU with more than 20 years of volleyball coaching experience. After five years as the head coach of the BYU club program, from 1984 to 1988, Peterson led the Penn State men’s volleyball team to five NCAA Final Four appearances, including a national championship in 1994.
Softball
Gordon Eakin is BYU‘s new head softball coach. Eakin has been an assistant coach at BYU since the softball program’s inception in 1999.
Oli Keohohou, ’04, was honored as an NFCA First-Team All-American for the second consecutive season. Keohohou is second in the nation in home runs per game at 0.34. Her batting average ranks her 15th in the country.
Track and Field
At the 2002 MWC Track and Field Championships, the BYU men’s track and field team claimed its fifth-straight outdoor title—its 19th overall. The BYU women’s team dominated the field and cruised to a record 20th-straight outdoor title.
John D. Hedengren, ’01, was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America Men’s Track and Field/Cross Country Second Team.
Michaela Mannova, ’04, won the national championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Mannova set a new NCAA Championship record of 9:45.94.
Kassi Andersen, ’05, Lindsey A. Johnson, ’05, and former Cougar Elizabeth A. Jackson, ’01, all earned the title of national champion at the 2002 U.S. Track and Field Championships in Palo Alto, Calif. Johnson won the 2002 USA Junior National Championship in the javelin, while Andersen won in the 1,500 meters. Jackson won the USA Senior National Championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
BYU head women’s track and field coach, R. Craig Poole, ’83, has been selected as one of five assistant coaches who will guide the United States’ women’s track and field team during the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
Tennis
Carlos Lozano, ’03, and Gert Vilms, ’02, were named to the All-American team. The doubles pair finished with a 24-9 doubles record and a No. 14 national ranking.
Women’s Golf
BYU golfers Lisa Dernick Hardy, ’02, and Adrianne Gibby Olson, ’02, were named to the National Golf Coaches Association Division I All-Scholar Team.
Former BYU All-American golfer David B. DeSantis, ’82, is the new assistant coach for the women’s golf team. DeSantis was a member of BYU‘s 1981 national-championship golf team.
Women’s Volleyball
Karen Curtis Lamb, ’79, is the new head coach of the BYU women’s volleyball program, replacing Elaine Michaelis, ’60, who retired from coaching but remains director of women’s athletics. An assistant to Michaelis the past eight seasons, Lamb brings 18 years of collegiate coaching experience, including two years coaching with the U.S. National Team. Jason M. Watson, ’95, former volleyball associate head coach at Kansas State, and Mari Burningham Carpenter, ’00, former head coach at American Fork High School, are new assistant coaches.
