“I am a Child of God” Lyricist Honored

Naomi W. Randall

Naomi W. Randall

On Oct. 13 BYU expressed gratitude to a woman who has touched the lives of every member of the LDS Primary organization since 1957. The woman was Naomi W. Randall, who had just celebrated her 90th birthday and who penned the words to “I am a child of God.” During the weekly devotional in the Marriott Center, President Merrill J. Bateman presented Randall with a Presidential Citation for her significant service to the children of the Church. In addition to being the lyricist for the popular hymn, Randall contributed prolifically to The Children’s Friend, served for 27 years on the Primary General Board, and chaired the committee that created the CTR (Choose the Right) ring.

When President Bateman presented Randall with the citation, the crowd of more than 3,000 gave her a sustained and heartfelt standing ovation.
