The Ballroom Dance Company placed first in both the Standard and Latin Divisions at the British Formation Championships in Blackpool, England, May 30 and June 1. The winnings mark the 15th and 16th first-place championship medals for BYU, extending a winning streak that dates back to 1989.
BYU's Dining Services won a 2001 Ivy Restaurateurs of Distinction Award, the only non-restaurant nominated to this year's list. The Ivy Award came with this praise: "Restaurant-quality on a grand scale—45,000 meals a day—sums up the food at BYU. The chefs at BYU have forever changed the poor reputation that campus restaurants and dining halls have endured. Best of all is the BYU-produced ice cream that comes in 140 flavors." BYU was also profiled in the May 15 issue of R&I magazine.
The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) announced that, among its national award winners, NewsNet's KBYU News is the best daily television newscast. KBYU News will receive its plaque and recognition in October at the SPJ national convention.
