KING DAY CELEBRATION

On Jan. 15, 2001, Martin Luther King Day, around 600 students and community members gathered at BYU for the annual "Walk of Life."

Early in the evening, students assembled at the Carillon Tower, where the event began with a prayer by Alisha Pixton, a junior from Poulsbo, Wash., and president of BYU's Black Student Union. Carrying lit candles and singing hymns, the crowd then walked slowly down the hill to the Wilkinson Student Center, where Multicultural Student Services had organized a commemorative program of speeches and music. The annual event is sponsored by BYU Student Life.
