Leonard Myles-Mills

Leonard Myles-Mills wins his second NCAA title in the 100-meter dash. His time, a personal best of 9.98 seconds, set a new Ghanaian national record.

Leonard Myles-Mills, a senior from Dansoma Accra, Ghana, won the 100-meter dash at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships in June, becoming the first athlete to win back-to-back NCAA titles in that race since 1977.

Also, in the final lap of the men’s 4 x 100-meter relay, Myles-Mills passed three runners and helped capture a third-place finish–the team’s best ever–for BYU’s relay team, whose other members were Thobias Akwenye, Slade Combs, and Clayton Patch. Another All-American was sophomore Jeff Hansen, whose 17-foot-10.5-inch pole vault earned him a fifth-place finish and tied BYU’s school record. The men’s outdoor track and field team finished 12th in the nation this year.

In the women’s championships, BYU’s outdoor track and field team finished 8th overall. Sophomore Tara Rohatinsky placed second in the 10,000-meter run, while seniors Marty Hernandez and Emily Nay finished fifth and eighth, respectively. Other All-American finishers included sophomore Sharolyn Shields (4th in the 3,000-meter run), and seniors Maggie Chan (7th in the 5,000-meter run), Alicia Brimhall (8th in the heptathlon), and Treva Bryant (8th in the 800-meter run).

Gymnasts Win National Titles

Entering this season, a BYU gymnast had never won an individual event national championship in men’s gymnastics. But Guard Young and Cortney Bramwell each earned a national title at the 1999 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Individual Event Finals. Bramwell finished an undefeated season on rings by scoring a 9.925–the highest score in any event at the championships–to win the national title. Young took the vault title (and set a new BYU record) with a 9.8125 and took second on the floor exercise with a 9.775. Young, whose father Wayne Young won the NCAA all-around title in 1975, also tied for fifth on the horizontal bar and was fifth in the all-around competition.
