What started as an idea scribbled on a napkin at Arctic Circle became DreamGiver, an animated short that won 2011 “student Emmys” for animation and for musical score from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation. Directed by napkin-scribbler Tyler T. Carter (’11), the six-minute story of a winged, dream-delivering creature innovatively combines 2-D and 3-D animation. And composer Lance Montgomery’s (BM ’10) enchanting music, performed by the BYU Philharmonic, brings the wordless film to life. “When I saw it, it didn’t look like a student film,” says Disney animator Bill Perkins. “It was very professional.” The awards make 11 “student Emmys” in the past eight years for BYU’s Center for Animation. DreamGiver was also selected to screen in the Cannes, Anima Mundi, and Comic-Con international film festivals.
